PL+US: Paid Leave for the United States

Overview
Headquarters:
San Francisco, CA, USA
Size:
11-50 employees
About Us
Mission:

We have one mission: winning high-quality paid family and medical leave for everyone.

Programs:

Paid Leave for the United States (PL+US) is the national campaign to win paid family leave by 2022, founded by Katie Bethell, who Fortune Magazine named one of the world’s greatest leaders. In just four short years, PL+US has won paid leave for nearly 8 million people. We’ve won change at some of the top employers in the country, including Walmart and Starbucks, and we’re taking that momentum into the fight to win national public policy. Paid leave is poised to take off as the next high-profile national issue.

Since our founding, the PL+US team has tripled in size and has cultivated a culture that is bold, curious, real, excellent, and compassionate. We are agile, collaborative problem solvers who are passionate about winning paid leave and we mean it when we say that family comes first, for those we fight alongside and for our own team.

Awards & Accolades:
Katie Bethell, Founder & Executive Director, The World's 50 Greatest Leaders, Fortune

Montana Legal Services Association

Overview
Headquarters:
Helena, Montana, USA
Annual Budget :
$1-5M
Size:
11-50 employees
Founded:
1966
About Us
Mission:

For over fifty years, the Montana Legal Services Association has helped ensure fairness for all in Montana’s justice system by providing civil, non-criminal legal services to low income Montanans living in all 56 Montana counties and on all Tribal Reservations.

Programs:

As a private, non-profit law firm, MLSA provides non-criminal legal information, advice, and representation to thousands of Montanans each year. MLSA’s services help fight scams on seniors, assist veterans who have been denied their earned benefits, help people escape abusive relationships, and represent families living in unsafe housing conditions.

“Equal Justice for All” is our shared ideal. Every year, millions walk under these words, engraved into the United States Supreme Court building. Every day, millions of schoolchildren pledge their allegiance to a republic “with liberty and justice for all.” And on countless TV shows, you hear the words, “If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you.”

Unfortunately, there is no right to an attorney for people facing non-criminal legal problems. For many people, especially those with limited incomes, the high cost of legal assistance can prevent them from obtaining even the most basic access to our court systems.

That’s why MLSA works to provide civil legal aid to low income individuals living throughout Montana – to ensure that equal justice for all is a reality for all Montanans, and not just for those who can afford it.

Awards & Accolades:
MLSA's Medical-Legal Partnership program received a certificate of recognition for their collaborative effort to improve community health at the Montana Healthy Communities Conference.
MLSA received the Mary Byron Celebrating Solutions Award in recognition of MLSA’s work to provide civil legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence and break the cycle of violence.
MLSA received a Community Impact Award at the Montana Housing Partnership Conference recognizing the impact of the Keep My Montana Home program on saving homes from foreclosure in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis.
MLSA received the Montana Board of Crime Control’s Innovative Community Improvement Award for using technology to increase access to justice in rural Montana.
Why Work For Us?:
  • Live your values and put your law degree to work by representing people who deserve a voice in our legal system.
  • Great benefits, generous leave, and competitive pay.
  • Access to free CLE seminars and opportunities to attend national conferences and trainings.
  • The chance to hone your litigation skills in a friendly and supportive work environment.

R Street Institute

Overview
Headquarters:
Washington D.C., DC, United States
Size:
11-50 employees
Founded:
2012
About Us
Areas of Focus:
Mission:

The R Street Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, public policy research organization (“think tank”). Our mission is to engage in policy research and outreach to promote free markets and limited, effective government.

Programs:

R Street’s major accomplishments to date include spearheading the SmarterSafer.org coalition, whose proposals were incorporated into the 2012 Biggert-Waters flood insurance reform bill signed by President Obama; launching the Legislative Branch Capacity Working Group, which seeks to assess Congress’ capacity to perform its constitutional duties and to collaborate on bipartisan ideas to improve the legislative branch’s performance in our separation of powers system; promoting the use of the Congressional Review Act which, after years of dormancy, began to be used aggressively during 2017; building a conservative movement-wide coalition to oppose misguided Internet sales tax legislation; developing a proposal to forbid subsidized development in environmentally sensitive coastal areas that was incorporated into Florida law; leading the charge to make crop insurance subsidies more accountable, a proposal that was included in the 2014 farm bill; and publishing research that led to the proliferation of dozens of state-level laws that offer commonsense minimum standards for liability insurance in the ridesharing market.

Some ongoing R Street projects include bringing free-market principles to state alcohol rules; participating in broad conversations on regulatory, budget and tax reform; promoting the potential for competitive wholesale electricity markets as a mechanism to phase out subsidies, better serve energy consumers and more accurately reflect all of the costs and benefits of generation; a public-education campaign on how harm-reduction strategies can be incorporated into messaging on such press public health topics as smoking, sexually transmitted diseases and drug addiction; a criminal justice project that has examined reforms to the juvenile justice system, pretrial detention policies and better ways to reintegrate ex-offenders into society; a project to promote a balanced approach to intellectual property; and coalitions to promote more open and transparent congressional data and to ensure law enforcement and intelligence agencies do not trample digital privacy. R Street also is an active member of a number of other standing coalitions (see the list here).

Why Work For Us?:

We believe free markets work better than the alternatives. At the same time, we recognize the legislative process calls out for practical responses to current problems. Toward that end, our motto is “Free markets. Real solutions.”
