Super Stars Literacy

Overview
Headquarters:
Oakland, CA, United States
Size:
11-50 employees
Founded:
2008
About Us
Mission:

To give every child the foundation for lifelong learning and achievement.

Programs:

Super Stars Literacy is an early literacy intervention program that provides in-school and after-school services to K-2nd grade students whose low literacy skills place them at high risk of later academic failure.  The program has three components:

Extended Learning Program: Students attend the extended learning program daily and receive literacy instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency, as well as social emotional support in empathy, impulse control, and conflict negotiation. The extended learning program is led by AmeriCorps Members (known as “Group Leaders”) who receive 250 hours per year of intensive training in classroom management and instruction.

Key Daily Activities:

  • Opening Circle and Newsletter
  • Literacy Mini-Lessons
  • Read-Aloud and Extension Activity
  • Guided Reading and Centers
  • Closing Circle
  • Homework

In-School Intervention: Group Leaders spend up to three hours per day in the students’ regular school-day classrooms, collaborating with teachers to provide one-on-one or small group reading support.

Family Engagement: SSL provides opportunities for caregivers to learn more about their child’s literacy and social emotional development via regular outreach, family reading nights, and other special events.

Why Work For Us?:

Super Stars Literacy is not just about promoting literacy for young children; it is about building a community of engaged learners and equipping them with the skills they need in order to succeed academically and in life.
―Karen Schreiner, former SSL AmeriCorps staff member

SSL AmeriCorps members, known as Group Leaders (GLs), are full-time AmeriCorps members who serve in Title I elementary schools throughout the East Bay Area. GLs provide one-on-one and small group intervention support  during the school day and lead an after-school literacy intervention program of no more than  16 students.

Super Stars Literacy Group Leaders serve in a cohort of 30 members all of whom  are interested in education, committed to making a lasting impact in their communities, and are excited about working with elementary age students. Prior to starting in the classroom, members participate in an extensive,  two-week orientation, and throughout the 11 month service term meet weekly with SSL staff for continued training, coaching, and mentoring.
