The Savanna Institute

Overview
Headquarters:
Madison, Wisconsin, USA
Annual Budget :
$1-5M
Size:
11-50 employees
Founded:
2013
About Us
Mission:

The Savanna Institute is a nonprofit organization that works with farmers and scientists to lay the groundwork for widespread agroforestry adoption in the Midwest. Inspired by the native savanna ecosystems that once covered much of this region, the Savanna Institute conducts research, education, and outreach to support the growth of diverse, perennial agroecosystems.

Programs:

Our major program areas include:

Education and outreach - we work directly with farmers and beginning farmers through on-farm events, apprenticeships, webinars, publications, and an online course.

Tree crop commercialization - this program focuses on the development of specific tree crops and the value chains and markets associated with them. Depending on the crop, program activities may include everything from plant breeding to market assessments to helping to form producer pools for aggregation and processing.

Direct farmer support - expert agroforesters work one-on-one with farmers to help develop individualized plans for agroforestry adoption and help farmers navigate federal cost-share programs and access other forms of financing.

Research - Staff scientists work to understand the major questions involved with agroforestry adoption and to make cutting-edge research available to farmers.

Why Work For Us?:

We are a young, high-energy, rapidly-growing organization. We're eager to expand the team!
