About Us
Areas of Focus:
Mission:

AWS is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect and restore the Anacostia River by bringing partners and communities together to achieve a clean and safe Anacostia River for the benefit of all living in its watershed and for future generations.

Programs:

The Anacostia Watershed Society offers a variety of programs designed to accelerate the Anacostia River's progress towards swimmable and fishable as defined in the 1972 Clean Water Act. In order to pursue this goal, the Anacostia Watershed Society works towards three subgoals:

  • Stop pollution now
  • Restore the river's natural systems
  • Rebuild the community's relationship to the river

Since our founding in 1989, we have engaged more than 100,000 adults and youth in our programs. With volunteers, we have planted more than 50,000 native trees, shrubs, and plants; eradicated 58 acres of invasive plant cover; restored more than 11 acres of wetland habitat; removed 1,257 tons of trash and debris from the river (and 11,575 tires); created more than 2.5 million square feet of green roofs and bioretention area to annually treat millions of gallons of stormwater runoff each year. AWS has educated and engaged more than 36,915 watershed students and trained 1,078 teachers from Maryland and DC to present our watershed curriculum to their students. With our partners, we have helped win lawsuits that have resulted in a significant decrease in sewage, stormwater, and trash in the Anacostia River.

Today, there is only one dentist for every 250,000 Rwandan citizens.

His Hands On Africa’s long-term goal is to increase the number of Rwandan dentists by establishing a state-of-the-art dental center, the HOPE Dental Center, in the capital city of Kigali. It will serve not only as the training ground where young Rwandan dentists receive advanced education, spiritual discipleship and hands-on training from U.S. specialists, but also as the home base for our network of Compassion Community Dental Clinics, which will be staffed by newly-minted dentists. These Clinics will provide much needed dental care throughout the country. His Hands On Africa will help break the cycle of pain and suffering by raising Christian dentists who will serve their communities through Gospel-centered healthcare with the aim to expand this transformative impact beyond Rwanda into the surrounding African nations.

Why Work For Us?:

His Hands on Africa is a growing team of caring people, dedicated to serving the people of Africa. Join our Founders, Board members, and team of volunteers in our early stage of growth, as our first employee. Work from home in Los Angeles, supporting our team and cultivating our donors, to help us achieve our mission of bringing hope and healing to the people of Africa.
