About Us
Areas of Focus:
Mission:

Our mission is to help social change leaders learn how to build and run more effective organizations so they can deliver great results.

Programs:

We want to see more social change in this country, and we know that producing it is hard. Disparities in money and power mean that social justice advocates need to fight not just as effectively as their opponents, but more effectively. That’s where The Management Center comes in: we help social justice leaders learn how to build and run more effective organizations, so that they can get better results.

As the go-to resource on effective management for social change organizations, we’ve worked with more than 100 of the most influential progressive groups in the country and trained thousands of individual managers on the practices that help high-performing organizations deliver lasting results over time.

We offer both intensive hands-on coaching services for executive directors and their senior leadership teams, as well as a series of management training courses that supply practical advice and tools that managers can put to work immediately.

Since 2006, The Management Center has:

  • shaped the management practices of more than 10,000 individual leaders through our training program
  • helped more than 350 organizations get better results through stronger management
  • distributed more than 25,000 copies of our book Managing to Change the World
Why Work For Us?:

5 Reasons to Work with The Management Center

1. By helping our clients, you’ll have an impact on the most important issues facing our country, like immigration, racial justice, health care, educational equity, and climate change.

2. Our clients are amazing people. You’ll work with leaders who go straight from talking with you to testifying on the Hill, leading a rally at the state capitol, or planning a new grassroots campaign with teams of organizers, and most days when you pick up the newspaper (or okay, read it online), you’ll see the results of their work.

3. Our team is awesome. You’ll be working with a group of smart, thoughtful, and genuinely nice people (at least we think we are!) who come from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds.

4. We’re committed to making our own organization one where people from all backgrounds – and in particular people with marginalized identities – thrive. While we have a lot of learning still to do, we’re working hard to incorporate equity and inclusion into all aspects of our work. That’s leading us to do things like proactively seeking to work with more groups led by and for people of color, supporting identity-based caucuses for our staff (we have people of color and indigenous people, LGBTQ, and white-identified allies caucuses), and making sure each person on our team continually hones their own cultural proficiency skills. More in the works here!

5. We try to practice what we preach: great management. You’ll have clear expectations, receive feedback (some of it even useful), get opportunities to grow and develop, and do it all in a culture that keeps the focus on real-world results and aspires to exhibit excellence with heart.

And a bonus reason… 6. We treat people well, from excellent salaries and benefits to flexible work arrangements to unusually good snacks.

Montana Legal Services Association

Overview
Headquarters:
Helena, Montana, USA
Annual Budget :
$1-5M
Size:
11-50 employees
Founded:
1966
About Us
Mission:

For over fifty years, the Montana Legal Services Association has helped ensure fairness for all in Montana’s justice system by providing civil, non-criminal legal services to low income Montanans living in all 56 Montana counties and on all Tribal Reservations.

Programs:

As a private, non-profit law firm, MLSA provides non-criminal legal information, advice, and representation to thousands of Montanans each year. MLSA’s services help fight scams on seniors, assist veterans who have been denied their earned benefits, help people escape abusive relationships, and represent families living in unsafe housing conditions.

“Equal Justice for All” is our shared ideal. Every year, millions walk under these words, engraved into the United States Supreme Court building. Every day, millions of schoolchildren pledge their allegiance to a republic “with liberty and justice for all.” And on countless TV shows, you hear the words, “If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you.”

Unfortunately, there is no right to an attorney for people facing non-criminal legal problems. For many people, especially those with limited incomes, the high cost of legal assistance can prevent them from obtaining even the most basic access to our court systems.

That’s why MLSA works to provide civil legal aid to low income individuals living throughout Montana – to ensure that equal justice for all is a reality for all Montanans, and not just for those who can afford it.

Awards & Accolades:
MLSA's Medical-Legal Partnership program received a certificate of recognition for their collaborative effort to improve community health at the Montana Healthy Communities Conference.
MLSA received the Mary Byron Celebrating Solutions Award in recognition of MLSA’s work to provide civil legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence and break the cycle of violence.
MLSA received a Community Impact Award at the Montana Housing Partnership Conference recognizing the impact of the Keep My Montana Home program on saving homes from foreclosure in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis.
MLSA received the Montana Board of Crime Control’s Innovative Community Improvement Award for using technology to increase access to justice in rural Montana.
Why Work For Us?:
  • Live your values and put your law degree to work by representing people who deserve a voice in our legal system.
  • Great benefits, generous leave, and competitive pay.
  • Access to free CLE seminars and opportunities to attend national conferences and trainings.
  • The chance to hone your litigation skills in a friendly and supportive work environment.

Strength in Numbers Consulting Group

Overview
Headquarters:
New York City,NY
Annual Budget :
$500,000-1M
Size:
1-10 employees
Founded:
2010
About Us
Mission:

Strength in Numbers is a women-owned, LGBTQ-led research and evaluation firm. We have three main strands of work: quantitative research and evaluation, qualitative research and evaluation and philanthropic strategy. The quantitative team also does systems building and capacity building/technical assistance, including advising on the creation, implementation and maintenance of effective monitoring and evaluation systems; this often includes selection and implementation of new databases. This position will report to the Principal Consultant who leads on quantitative work (Somjen Frazer).

We do community-based evaluation projects, research projects and philanthropic strategy in a fast-paced environment, with each consultant managing a portfolio of multiple projects of varying sizes. Our practice includes collaborations with a wide variety of marginalized groups, particularly those with intersecting experiences of oppression (e.g. low income youth of color, young children and ethnic minorities in the developing world, transgender women engaged in sex work). Over half of the projects we undertake are focused on LGBTQ+ communities. Our philosophy centers consultation with the marginalized groups affected by the social issues and social programs we research and evaluate. Community members have substantive input into our approach to projects, including helping to build research questions, selecting methods and interpreting data. Our quantitative work is rigorous and we are meticulous in assuring that our findings are accurate prior to release. We are a small firm, and all consultants contribute to the running of the company and doing some administrative tasks. While this position would be primarily quantitative, Strength in Numbers also has members focused on qualitative methods and many of our projects involve multi-method research.
