American Prairie seeks an experienced Senior Outreach Manager to lead a comprehensive engagement and outreach strategy in Montana geared toward increasing awareness of our mission to conserve a unique part of the state and to welcome the public to experience an existing and growing array of opportunities to enjoy American Prairie Reserve.

The ideal candidate for this highly public-facing position is an exceptional relationship cultivator, effective communicator, and skilled listener with strong drive and initiative passionate about our innovative, ambitious vision of conservation and talented in engaging with the public to share information, build public knowledge and connect individuals and groups to our mission.

This position is based in Lewistown, Montana, American Prairie’s "gateway" community and home to our National Discovery Center, scheduled to open in the summer of 2021. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

JOB PURPOSE: In collaboration with numerous colleagues, the Senior Outreach Manager leads a comprehensive Montana engagement and outreach strategy aimed to increase awareness of our mission to conserve a unique part of the state and to welcome the public to experience an existing and growing array of opportunities to enjoy American Prairie Reserve. As a highly public-facing representative of American Prairie, the Senior Outreach Manager is responsible for educating Montanans about our vision for conservation, wildlife restoration, and public recreation and for engaging with individuals and groups with the goal of building advocates for our mission. Based in Lewistown, our ‘gateway’ community, the Senior Outreach Manager focuses efforts on rural and community areas surrounding the Reserve with emphasis on representing American Prairie in the Lewistown area.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

  • Recommend and implement strategies to build awareness and support of our mission.
  • Build a constituency of public advocates for our mission.
  • Cultivate and steward our ongoing relationships with Indigenous communities and manage related programs and projects.
  • Organize and facilitate outreach events such as town halls, informational gatherings or other meetings including acting as a presenter and securing other staff, collaborators, or advocates as participants and presenters.
  • Seek out and create opportunities to engage and collaborate with associations, affinity groups and state agencies on conservation issues or initiatives aligned with American Prairie’s goals and objectives.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge and expertise in order to respond to and act as a resource for those seeking information on the mission, the project, and access opportunities on the Reserve.
  • Monitor local social and traditional media outlets to maintain a pulse on opportunities for outreach and on public perceptions of American Prairie, sharing information with colleagues as relevant.
  • Serve as the staff liaison for regional working groups and advisory councils.
  • Serve as staff point person to manage the strategy for giving donations or providing sponsorships in support of the local community.
Skills/Experience: 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Enthusiasm for and positive representation of American Prairie’s mission, goals and culture.
  • Five plus years of related professional experience.
  • Demonstrated project or program management skills including developing and implementing strategies.
  • Demonstrated integrity and professionalism.
  • Savvy communication, presentation and listening skills across settings including one-on-one conversations and formal or informal group settings.
  • Outgoing with a strong desire to engage interpersonally, to connect with others, and to cultivate relationships.
  • Skilled in interacting and working productively with individuals and groups with diverse or divergent interests and beliefs.
  • Resilience in navigating public perceptions and relations and ability to productively manage conflict and difficult interactions with de-escalation and mediation skills to foster positive outcomes.
  • Proficient with current technology devices and software including cloud-based software for organizing, storing, and creating documents and spreadsheets or working in databases.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.     
  • Ability to travel frequently, generally driving within Montana.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends or other non-traditional work hours as needed.


Preferred

  • Mediation and conflict resolution applied experience and/or training.
  • Familiarity with and interest in Montana culture, politics, and economics.
  • Familiarity with database membership systems such as SalesForce.
