The Camp Nurse is responsible for providing routine medical care, first aide, and medication distribution to campers and staff. The Camp Nurse will assist camp staff in maintaining a healthy and safe environment at camp.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Discuss health and safety procedures, precautions, and routines with staff during Staff Training.
- Guide the counselors and program staff in regard to their responsibilities in noticing and reporting illness, injury, or unsafe practices and conditions that might contribute to camper or staff accidents.
- Be available in the Nurse’s Station or by radio to staff and campers for medical questions or concerns and first aid treatment throughout residential camping sessions.
- Check the sleeping and eating quarters on camp for health and safety conditions.
- Administer all medications and treatments according to physician's orders and keep records of all such treatment.
- Maintain complete records in the nurse's log of all medically-related contacts, including the complete disposition of care and treatment.
- Report all medical emergencies and medical errors to the Camp Director immediately after contacting 911.
- Complete all staff and camper health and accident forms promptly, and submit them to the Camp Director immediately.
- Check all first aid kits on camp regularly for cleanliness, organization, and restocking.
- Make a physical check of campers on their arrival at and departure from camp and review all health records, discussing particular items with the counselors concerned.
- Be responsible for any drugs, medicines, and first aid kits brought to camp by campers and staff.
- Complete required close-of-camp evaluations, equipment inventory, and treatment records, and any other necessary paperwork.
- Consult with Head Cook on camper menus and health and safety measures pertaining to kitchen.
- Work with the Head Cook to ensure that special dietary needs of campers are met.
- Review all health paperwork for campers prior to camp sessions.
Educational Background:
Registered Nursing Degree and Licensed in the State of Washington.
Skills/Experience:
- Experience or a background in school, visiting, or public health nursing (an asset, but not required).
- Ability to meet physical requirements of position including lifting up to 50 lbs., bending, squatting, twisting, reaching overhead, walking on wet surfaces, long hours standing, and working in extreme temperatures.
