Under the supervision of the SVP, Resource Development & Marketing, this part-time (20 hours per week) position requires a results-oriented team player with excellent project management and writing skills who has a strong interest in addressing the goals of Thrive2027 (http://www.thrive2027.org/). This position is responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of grant and proposal management for unrestricted operating revenue, restricted operating revenue/restricted projects. In addition, this individual submits timely and accurate reports for all existing and new grant funded projects.

This role will include researching, evaluating, preparing, submitting, tracking, and advocating for proposals to national, community, state and federal funding sources for an integrated and aligned implementation, meeting United Way Greater Portland’s (UWGP’s) revenue goals.

Responsible for the overall delivery and communication of work assignments within the department, this position will work closely with the SVP, Resource Development & Marketing and UWGP’s Community Impact directors to determine work tactics, project deliverables, and resources required to complete target goals.

Seeking grants or engaging in fundraising activities for any other organization would not be appropriate for the Grants Manager. In future years, depending on organizational revenue and strategic priorities, this position could move to full-time.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Grant Development / Sourcing

  • Proactively cultivates, develops and manages relationships with a network of grant-making institutions to meet revenue targets. Continually builds the pipeline over a multi-year period, staying apprised of developments in the field.
  • Working with Senior Leadership, engages with program officers at grant-making organizations to identify areas of strategic alignment and to solicit requests for proposals.
  • Provides stewardship to funders by ensuring appropriate grant acknowledgement and recognition and provides frequent written reports leveraging existing resources and data.
  • Creates, fosters and maintains effective relationships with funding organizations, volunteers, board members, community leaders, prospective donors, and all UWGP staff.
  • Thinks creatively about innovative grant solutions that meet UWGP’s Community Impact goals and objectives.

Grant Writing / Administration / Management

  • Generates revenue for UWGP through timely submission of well-researched, well-written and well-documented grant/funding proposals according to the funder’s requirements. 
  • Develops and maintains thorough familiarity of UWGP’s mission, vision, values and daily operations to effectively develop, integrate and align current and prospective grant-writing strategy.
  • Meets or exceeds annual goals for revenue and number of applications submitted. 
  • Maintains and implements funding calendar, reporting, and activity log including cultivation activities on a shared drive and in Andar (organizational database).
  • Works closely with Finance and Community Impact teams to gather relevant grant data, to understand, monitor, and communicate about UWGP’s grants program, and to develop grant budgets.
  • Leverages, as appropriate, external resources such as consultants to produce funding proposals in accordance with monthly targets.
  • Proactively develops and completes thoughtful ROI analysis for any grants submitted & received, anticipating and addressing compliance requirements and fulfillment.
  • Conducts pre-grant application meetings/reviews with appropriate team members across departments to determine cost/benefits, eligibility, timelines, responsibilities, and application process.

Other

  • Participates as a team member in Resource Development and Marketing and organizational activities.
  • Actively participates in projects, special events, cross-functional teams or workgroups that support the work of the entire organization.
  • Working with Director of Evaluation, proactively provides Marketing and Resource Development staff with success stories and supporting data to promote our results and community impact.
  • Provides superior service that exceeds the expectations of both internal and external customers.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years proven grant writing experience, with complex grant submissions and revenue achievement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and relationships with local and national grant-making institutions.
  • Ability to synthesize data, conduct research and use strong critical thinking and analytical skills to source prospective and relevant revenue sources, determining appropriate fit for UWGP.
  • Ability to turn data into narrative, and creatively find funding sources to meet project requirements.
  • Superior English writing skills: writes clearly and informatively; varies writing style to meet needs; presents numerical data effectively; able to read, interpret written information quickly assessing fit and translating relationship to UWGP’s needs/services.
  • Excellent project management skills, moving from strategy to tactics, as projects require.
  • Generates creative solutions, demonstrates superior attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge and comfort with math and finance principles.
  • Ability to work effectively under rigorous deadlines when necessary, either independently or with others.
  • Ability to ensure that all key stakeholders keep UWGP’s vision, mission and initiatives front and center.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint). CRM sales and/or donor software experience desirable.
  • Ability to interact directly with C-suite-level volunteers and staff in a team environment.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
