Indiana United Ways (IUW) is a statewide organization with a staff of 25 that helps local United Ways thrive during a time of unprecedented transformation. United Ways fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community, and this position directly supports effective community impact work with our members across Indiana. Under the guidance of the Chief Strategy Officer and with the expectation of working cross-functionally with other staff, this position is the primary manager of the IUW grants portal and subgrants available to local United Ways. Additionally, this position supports existing and future grants received by IUW, including a current AmeriCorps grant, and helps to develop and support impact work performed by local United Ways. Success in this position entails attention to detail, ability to create and follow systems and policies for compliance with grants, and to ideate and collaborate with others to find creative and appealing impact solutions that change lives. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supports local United Ways in implementing community impact work. Works with local United Ways to develop lasting impact strategies built from/that build upon grant activities and programs. Build relationships with local United Ways in order to gauge interest and capacity toward improving Community Impact performance. Leads and supports grant and proposal writing to bring additional resources to IUW and communities in Indiana. 
  • Manages the administration and member support of key grant opportunities offered to IUW members. Staffs a Committee of volunteers that reviews grant applications on an ongoing basis. Implements a grants management portal to facilitate grant applications, review, and reporting. Provides assistance to members in making successful grant applications. 
  • Collaborates with staff, volunteers, board members and partner organizations to further the mission and work of Indiana’s United Ways. Supports and expands upon IUW’s statewide community partnerships in support of the network’s community impact work, advocacy, and other special projects. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required in Public Administration, Social Work, or relevant field.  
Skills/Experience: 

Complexity:    

  • Ability to organize and coordinate many tasks and projects at once. Ability to develop and follow systems to ensure effective management of key grants and other work. 
  • Regular use of judgment and discernment in communication. Ability to meet with local United Way staff and board members, IUW board members, and community partners without supervision.  
  • Comfort with managing 3-6 major grants, totaling $6 million and above. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the development of proposals, reports, and other organizational documents of length and substance.   

Education and/or Experience:   

  • Two or more years of grant writing and grant management experience preferred. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team-based environment and build and maintain relationships across diverse staff, board, and members.  
  • Analytical. Systems-oriented. Learns and applies new knowledge quickly. Problem solver. Adept at “What if?” thinking. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication and experience.  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office computer applications to include Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel and able to execute at an intermediate or above level.   
  • Comfortable with technology and learning new technology to promote collaboration. 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:  

  • Moderate level of mental and/or visual fatigue and/or eyestrain may result from looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time and moderate office noise level.  
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.   
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.  
  • Moderate level of stress caused from tight deadlines.   
  • Work outside of normal business hours. 
  • Periodic travel (in-state and out-of-state), access to own transportation, and valid driver's license are required.
