The Senior Account Manager at Heart of West Michigan United Way (HWMUW) is part of the Resource Development team. Account Managers are responsible for driving relationships with assigned accounts, while implementing fundraising and volunteer strategies at the employee level. Primary job responsibilities also include providing superior customer service to key constituents including donors and company campaign coordinators as well as new business development efforts.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Drive relationships with assigned portfolio of accounts to develop stronger United Way partnerships and workplace fundraising campaign support.
  • Establish and meet defined goals for assigned portfolio as well as any new business development goals determined by United Way’s leadership.
  • Identify, recruit, and develop prospects for new business development on a year-round basis. New business includes new workplace campaigns, new corporate gifts, new sponsorships, and/or new in-kind gifts for United Way.
  • Assist with the management of United Way’s Campaign Cabinet volunteers.  United Way’s Campaign Cabinet includes community leaders who support United Way to assist in raising money as part of the annual fundraising campaign.  Account Managers will need to assist with reporting and supporting Cabinet volunteers when appropriate.
  • Participate in action planning, including the development of donor segmentation, research and engagement to increase retention/giving and the development of processes to ensure collaboration, integration and alignment of Resource Development team.
  • Manage assigned volunteers, assisting with goal setting and, in conjunction with the CRM and Data team, monitor reports for actual and projected progress to goal.
  • Hire, oversee, and lend direction to Campaign Associates/interns.
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit donors and prospects at the leadership level within assigned accounts.  Work in conjunction with department to grow membership of the United Way’s Leadership Giving Circle ($1000+/year) and Tocqueville Society ($10,000+/year).
  • Review and finalize donor data, progress reports, and mailing lists, ensuring accuracy and comprehensiveness.
  • Ensure consistent implementation, and recommend improvements, of up-to-date policies and processes for areas of responsibility.
  • Continually research and share opportunities, best practices, trends and benchmark data to inform United Way and its efforts to attract, retain and engage donors.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Clearly articulate and communicate United Way’s value proposition to audiences of all sizes.
  • Partner with companies/organizations to achieve their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), philanthropic and community engagement goals.
  • Increase the value and visibility of the Volunteer Center for corporate and community clients.
  • Actively participate in identified opportunities for professional growth, including supervisory and team meetings, trainings, and organization-wide events.
  • Promote United Way’s values among internal and external constituents.  This includes United Way’s strong commitment to diversity.  All staff are required to participate in the Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Healing Racism as well as quarterly cultural competency events.  Staff must also work to embody United Way’s core values of being authentic, collaborative, trustworthy, inclusive, and transparent.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Moderate to high level of analytical skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills.
  • The direction of others – no direct reports, volunteers as assigned.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in fundraising, marketing, and/or sales required.
  • Extremely effective verbal and written communication skills with an ability to relate with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Experience leveraging a high level of attention to detail, organizational skills and accuracy.
  • Ability to understand complex organizations and systems and ability to work in harmony with peers, and as an active team member.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and be adaptable to support continuous change
  • Proficient computer skills including knowledge of customer relationship management systems, electronic giving and information exchange, and Microsoft Office software programs.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Moderate level of physical activity during campaign season.
  • Ability to lift, carry, move up to 25lbs.
  • Requires extensive periods of time at a computer.
  • Work outside of normal business hours will be required from time to time.
