The Grant Writer, as a member of the Foundation and Grants team, helps shape compelling, well-researched, and thorough content for written communications with Mile High United Way's foundation and government funders. Most of the position focuses on writing. This role also assists with researching new funding opportunities, scheduling internal planning meetings, and helping to schedule and prepare for meetings with funders. Additionally, the Grant Writer is a strong partner in all grant efforts, by continuing to build a robust grants pipeline; ensuring deadlines are met; and facilitating strong relationships with funders.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Leads the writing, proofreading, editing, and on-time submission of assigned grant proposals, letters of intent, concept papers, and reports to foundation and government funders
  • Researches funding opportunities from corporate foundations, private and community foundations, and government agencies, and assists with interpreting guidelines and assessing whether grant opportunities fit with Mile High United Way's programs and Community Impact Goals
  • Works across departments (including with Community Investment, Finance, and Evaluation and Learning) to ensure the grants team has the most current information for proposals and attachments, including up-to-date information on program plans and targeted outcomes, program demographics, current board lists, and financials
  • Works with the Finance and Executive staff to gain final approvals and signatures as required
  • Partners with the Senior Manager, Foundations and Grants to compile all components of each grant submission, ensuring that each proposal is high-quality and submitted in accordance with granting agency requirements
  • Provides appropriate levels of assistance and oversight of grant reporting
  • Demonstrates strong customer service orientation with foundation and government funding representatives, to include internal and external partners, acting as a conduit and facilitator to ensure information is accurate, timely and thorough
  • Maintains confidentiality when working with sensitive budget information
  • Displays a high level of professionalism and team orientation
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in English, journalism, communications, public relations, marketing or related field required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Required Experience: Minimum of 1-year experience in grant writing, prospect research, general fundraising or a minimum of 2 years comparable and transferable skills acquired in a professional setting required
  • Preferred Experience: Minimum 2 years' experience in grant writing, prospect research, general fundraising or related field desirable

Special Skills & Knowledge

  • A high level of proficiency with English grammar and punctuation
  • Must be able to compile content, write new content, proofread, and edit documents
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as professional reports, publications, and grant guidelines
  • Knowledge of how to conduct research and a general understanding of federal, state and private/community funding sources and mechanisms desired
  • Basic knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management principles and procedures desired

Computer Skills

  • Demonstrated experience using computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and presentation
  • Salesforce or other donor database experience desired.
