Reporting to the, Senior Director, Major and Planned Giving, the Senior Director of Donor Relations (“Senior Director”) will be a leader in the major gift program for United Way of Metropolitan Dallas (UWMD) and the United Way Foundation of Metropolitan Dallas (UWFMD).  Working closely with the CDO, the President and CEO, and the Senior Director of Major and Planned Giving, the Senior Director will be focused on growing and stewarding relationships at United Way through major and planned gifts in support of the organization’s $100 million Unite Forever campaign.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Responsible for soliciting major gifts of $250,000 and higher in addition to maintaining annual gift support from a portfolio of current and prospective donors.
  • Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for prospects and donors within assigned portfolio, collaborating as appropriate with staff leaders, volunteers, and Board members.
  • Participate in a cross-functional Unite Forever campaign team to determine priorities, strategy and implement campaign plan.
  • Plan and execute Unite Forever campaign strategies and initiatives in partnership with senior staff and volunteer leadership.
  • Retain a portfolio of community and workplace Tocqueville Society members and prospects with a high likelihood for transformational gifts.
  • Remain conversant in planned giving vehicles/techniques and financial and estate planning concepts.
  • Work closely with staff colleagues to help integrate planned giving opportunities and messages into full scope of Resource Development activities.
  • Partner with CDO and CFO and/or other financial staff to ensure good financial stewardship of planned gifts entrusted to UWFMD.
  • Work closely with Donor Relations team to create donor strategies and proposals with focus on growth and retention.
  • Conduct a minimum of 80 personal visits annually to cultivate or solicit major gifts to meet long-term major gift revenue goals.
  • Gain a solid understanding of UWMD programs and initiatives. Take a leadership role in soliciting funds for UWMD led impact projects and initiatives including United Way’s Social Innovation Fund.
  • Maintain record of all cultivation strategies, contacts, solicitations, and results of contacts with prospects and donors in the database of record.
  • Performance will be evaluated and reported via various metrics, including face-to-face prospect visits, documented communications and interactions, and solicitations submitted and secured.
  • Provide effective stewardship to major donors and develop and document plans for continued engagement.
  • Work across the organization to better cultivate our donors as well as identify new potential donors.
  • Leverage prospect management and prospect research best practices and tools.
  • Actively engage donors and prospects through events. Provide consistent follow-up pre- and post-event to move relationships forward and secure commitments.
  • Participate or lead departmental or organizational project teams as requested.
  • Participate in UWMD and UWFMD Board Meetings as appropriate.
  • Maintain discretion and confidentiality as required of donor and volunteer relationships.
Educational Background: 
A Bachelor’s degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of six years of fundraising experience, with demonstrated success closing major gift commitments.
  • Demonstrated capability to identify, cultivate and solicit major gifts from individuals, corporations and private foundations.
  • Understanding of corporate and foundation grants process.
  • Fundamental understanding of planned giving.
  • Understanding of corporate sponsorships.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Dallas and North Texas philanthropic community desired.
  • Experience working with high-level decision-makers, trustees and other volunteers.
  • Excellent organizational, project management and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take full ownership of assignments.
  • Excellent collaborator and team member, able to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize prospect tracking systems and donor databases and reporting tools.
  • Ability to set expectations, establish priorities and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced development department.
  • Outstanding written communication skills—for proposal preparation, communications with donors, and reports (such as newsletters and annual reports)—and oral communication skills for individual and group interactions and presentations
