The Director of Major Gifts is responsible for advancing our mission by successfully executing the Leadership Giving Program and its commensurate benefit fulfillment, overseeing all individual major gifts activities, maintaining prospect management systems and cultivation strategies, managing solicitation and acknowledgment processes, and developing and executing multi-channel appeals.
This position reports to the Resource Development Director and supervises the Associate Director of Donor Engagement.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Maintain the major gifts pipeline and work with team members on cultivation strategies and portfolio management for major individual gifts
- Link donors’ philanthropic goals with United Way programs, initiatives and volunteer opportunities
- Work with Resource Development staff to develop strategies to increase the number of major and leadership donors within the workplace
- In partnership with the Director of Marketing and Communications, create and distribute patron communications and collateral, ensuring alignment between departments
- Prioritize short- and long-term development communications needs
- Design and manage department-steered events, ranging from patron cultivation activities to the annual Leadership Giving service award dinner
- Provide development revenue and projection reporting
- Work with and support the activities of the board of directors and affinity groups to grow major gifts revenue
- Participate in general management and strategic planning by serving on organization-wide Leadership Team
- Record patron interactions and communications in CRM software; prepare and regularly run all reports necessary to track progress toward goals
- Work with other departments to identify potential funding opportunities
- Enhance and execute planned-giving strategies
- Participate in evening and weekend events and travel as required
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. CFRE credential preferred
Skills/Experience:
- Demonstrated success in securing major gifts from individuals and private foundations
- Demonstrated success in securing multi-year pledges to support capital or special-initiative campaigns
- Demonstrated management and leadership skills
- Demonstrated respect for diversity, equity and inclusiveness in interactions with current and potential donors
- Commitment to strengthening the Asheville-Buncombe community and reducing the impact of poverty on people’s lives
- Demonstrated success in working with volunteers
- A high degree of comfort interacting with donors at all levels
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Superior writing skills, attention to detail and high standards for presentation and written material
- Ability to thrive in a results-driven team environment, with minimal supervision
- Ability to manage and complete multiple projects with competing deadlines
- Advanced proficiency in CRM Systems and Microsoft Office Suite/G-Suite
- Ability to stay abreast of technology and trends in donor research
- Minimum 5 years in fundraising, major gifts and individual stewardship experience required
- Experience in health and human services development preferred
