Although veterans have a lower poverty rate than other Americans, 6.9 percent vs 14.4 percent in 2012, the fact that almost 1.5 million veterans live in poverty in the United States is disgraceful. We need your help to get military veterans and families living in poverty get on stable financial ground. During your service year as a Mission United AmeriCorps VISTA with United Way, you will work on the economic mobility project and will have an opportunity to enhance and introduce programs that help volunteers, donors and advocates understand the challenges of living in poverty and put Veterans on a path toward financial empowerment.

As a member of United Way Worldwide’s Volunteer Engagement team, your efforts will focus on building the capacity of local United Ways, their partners and Mission United to support programs that engage corporate partners and community volunteers to help increase job readiness, provide tax preparation services, and financial education training.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • The Mission United VISTA will help build and enhance United Way’s efforts to increase the number of economically disadvantaged veterans with improved financial knowledge and placed in jobs by evaluating the effectiveness of programs that help veterans living in poverty obtain employment and improve their financial education and management skills and then recommending and promoting implementation of strategies that leverage volunteers to strengthen and those programs.
  • Promotion strategies include (but are not limited to) producing online guides, hosting webinars, building toolkits, organizing conference calls, and drafting blogs for United Way staff around the globe that engage volunteers.
  • The VISTA Member will also plan, execute, and increase engagement in episodic and signature volunteer events that create a greater awareness in the community about the struggles of people living in poverty and how individuals can help address those challenges through service and philanthropy.
Educational Background: 
Must be 21 years of age or older. Bachelor’s degree required.
