The Beacon

Overview
Headquarters:
Kansas City, MO, USA
Size:
1-10 employees
Founded:
2020
About Us
Mission:

The Beacon is a growing force in Kansas City’s local journalism ecosystem — filling critical news gaps and strengthening community understanding.

We produce accessible journalism on critical local issues. Our reporting covers essential subjects like health, education, local government, labor and housing. We also cover the Kansas Statehouse, the Missouri Statehouse and rural health care across Missouri.

Programs:

The Beacon launched in 2020 in Kansas City, Missouri, during the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing a dire need for trustworthy local news. By 2022, we had reporters in both the Missouri and Kansas statehouses, enhancing our statewide coverage. That expansion allows us to support local and rural publishers, greatly increasing the range and depth of information available to the public. Now, we offer our stories for anyone to republish for free.

Why Work For Us?:

We’re committed to building an equitable and inclusive organization that represents the people and communities we serve. We know our work matters more when it’s enriched by people who’ve traditionally been excluded or marginalized in newsrooms. You’re welcome here.
