Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA

Overview
Headquarters:
Washington, D.C., USA
Annual Budget :
$100-500,000
Founded:
1982
About Us
Areas of Focus:
Mission:

The Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA (GHRC) is a nonprofit, grassroots, solidarity organization dedicated to promoting human rights in Guatemala and supporting communities and activists who face threats and violence. GHRC documents and denounces abuses, educates the international community, and advocates for policies that foster peace and justice.

Programs:

The Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA (GHRC) is a non-profit, grassroots, solidarity organization dedicated to promoting human rights in Guatemala and supporting communities and activists who face threats and violence. GHRC documents and denounces abuses, educates the international community, and advocates for policies that foster peace and justice.

Our work

GHRC analyzes the structural causes of human rights violations and the impact those abuses have on the population, with a particular focus on women and vulnerable communities. We provide reports and educational materials to the international community related to human rights in Guatemala and offer ways in which allies can effect positive change. We advocate for government policies in Guatemala and the United States that promote human rights, protect those Guatemalans striving to uphold those rights, and contribute to positive, systemic change. And we provide direct support to human rights defenders threatened or attacked for their work.

Our current areas of focus include militarization; women’s rights; truth, justice and historic memory; criminalization and impunity; and access to land and natural resources.

Why Work For Us?:

The Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA is a small nonprofit that has managed to have a big impact in its four decades of work. Staff members typically have the opportunity to travel to Guatemala to support human rights defenders, teach others about country conditions and history, and witness the courage of those risking their lives for change. Staff members also are called to speak truth to power, as GHRC advocates for the rights of the Guatemala people by pressing for more just policies in Washington.

Because GHRC is a small organization, staff members have the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of the work. An experienced board leads the organization, a broad base of grassroots supporters engage in advocacy initiatives, and our Guatemala office director does direct work with threatened defenders on the ground.

24th Street Theatre

Overview
Headquarters:
Los Angeles, CA
Annual Budget :
$500,000-1M
Size:
1-10 employees
Founded:
1997
About Us
Mission:

To engage, educate, and provoke young people and their families with excellent theatre and arts education.

Programs:

We believe that the young people we reach today will grow up to be active participants in their communities who are notable for their generosity, independent thinking, and passion for the arts. We envision a change in the culture of Los Angeles: people animated by a greater sense of inter-connectedness, empathy and humanity. The components of that vision include:

  • Bringing families together so that outstanding shared artistic experiences give families substantive topics for conversations.

  • Creating consistently great theatre (in both performance and in education) in a compassionate space where we hold a responsibility for the well-being of our community.

  • A place where neighborhood residents come for inspiration -- the shows, the programs, the kids, the parents. People leave with their hearts full, and, over time, with their lives changed.

  • 24th ST is a destination for community gatherings, and the diversity of the community is evident. Because the doors are open it's clear that everyone is welcome, and sees each other as equal. We function in many ways as a secular church, where people are creating community through shared experiences with powerful theatre.

  • Artistically excellent, sophisticated theatre, including Spanish-language work, national and international touring, and deep and powerful teaching in the arts.

  • World-class artists who share our vision are strongly connected to the theatre. Our plays don't look like anything the rest of the theatre world is creating.

  • We are recognized as a leader in theatre for young audiences, influencing the field to be more adventurous, more sophisticated, more provocative.

The Redford Center

Overview
Headquarters:
San Francisco, CA
Size:
1-10 employees
About Us
Mission:

Co-founded in 2005 by Robert Redford and his son James Redford, The Redford Center uses the power of storytelling to galvanize environmental justice and regeneration. Our cross-cutting programs support environmental storytellers and invest in impact-driven narrative strategies. By amplifying and changing the conversations around environmentalism, we aim to engage a much broader and more diverse population in the movement.

Programs:

Over the years, The Redford Center has produced three award-winning feature documentaries and over 30 short films, supported 75+ film and media projects with grants and other services, inspired over 400 student films, and dispersed more than $8 million to our fiscally sponsored projects.  Our films activate real change – we have engaged millions of viewers across all 50 states and 45 countries, inspiring hope and generating demand for a world where human and planetary health are fundamental values driving action. Our impact campaigns have halted the construction of dirty coal plants, reconnected the Colorado River to the Sea of Cortez, and helped accelerate the clean energy revolution in America.

The majority of our diverse film portfolio is made by or about women leading the environmental and climate justice movement, and our growing network of 400+ environmentally engaged storytellers also represent youth, communities of color, and LBGTQ+ communities, who are among the groups historically underrepresented in media and the environmental movement, and who are often among those leading progress on the ground and enacting the solutions needed to safeguard humanity and our planet.

Why Work For Us?:

As we move to meet the urgency of the times, we are looking for team members who are nimble, excited to help shape a growing organization, and who are energized about our mission of environmental impact using storytelling.
