Grant Writer
The Grant Writer is responsible for crafting PHI fundraising materials, including grant proposals and reports, as well as foundation-facing correspondence. Excellent writing and editing are a must—and work in these areas will constitute the majority of the Grant Writer’s responsibilities. The Grant Writer works closely with our Director of Development, VP of Partnerships & Engagement, Finance Team, and other PHI executive and program staff as we expand and diversify our fundraising efforts.
- Independently draft concise, clear, and persuasive grant proposals and reports to philanthropic organizations—primarily to foundations but also to government entities and corporate foundations.
- Draft additional development materials and correspondence, including acknowledgement letters for grants and individual gifts, impact reports, and donor-focused outreach.
- Compile and analyze data on program outcomes, incorporating it into documents in a thoughtful manner that supports the narrative.
- Collaboratively edit and finalize fundraising materials for submission.
- In collaboration with PHI’s Director of Development, help diversify PHI’s revenue sources through prospecting—by proactively identifying new funding sources through online research and regular monitoring of industry news sources, as well as by researching prospects identified by other staff.
- Create detailed research profiles of prospective funders for review by PHI’s President and CEO, VP of Partnerships & Engagement, and Director of Development.
- Help to maintain a Salesforce database of fundraising activities, including a calendar of grant-related deadlines.
- Collaborate with PHI’s Director of Development, and Policy, Research & Evaluation, Workforce Innovations Teams to ensure the effective coordination of the organization’s fundraising and programmatic efforts.
- Participate in meetings with funders, as necessary.
- Assist with the preparation of materials for PHI’s Board of Directors, including quarterly program updates.
- Contribute to document finalization efforts across the organization, such as proofreading and copy/line editing.
- 2+ years of demonstrated success in grant writing required. Comparable writing experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting, will also be considered.

- Comfort with understanding and using data in assessing program outcomes, including processing and cleanup of information extracted from databases.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of databases and software including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with using online research tools (such as Foundation Directory Online) and grant application portals (e.g., Fluxx) a plus.
This is a full-time, salaried position with a base salary range of $65,000 - $80,000 per year, commensurate with skills and experience.
