The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation of Florida seeks a Senior Research & Data Strategist that works within the Policy & Advocacy Department to achieve the organization’s goal of protecting the liberties that define our democracy.

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Florida (ACLU of Florida or ACLU-FL) is an affiliate of the national ACLU, a national public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights.  For over 100 years, the ACLU has served as the nation’s primary protector of the liberties that define our democracy.  The organization implements its vital civil liberties mission in all 50 states in large part through affiliate entities such as the ACLU of Florida.  

The ACLU of Florida, the state’s largest civil rights and civil liberties organization, employs litigation, public policy advocacy & organizing, and public education to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional values and individual rights, such as freedom of speech, racial justice, right to privacy, religious liberty, criminal justice reform, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, and immigrants’ rights. The ACLU of Florida litigates a broad range of complex constitutional cases in federal and state courts through direct representation, filing amicus briefs, and submitting administrative complaints to state and federal agencies.  

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Senior Research & Data Analyst serves as a key driver of data-informed strategy for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida (ACLU of Florida), transforming complex information into actionable insights that advance civil rights and civil liberties. This role leads high-level data analytics, reporting, and research efforts to support the organization’s policy, advocacy, and campaign priorities.

Work involves data management activities including, but not limited to, data cleaning, analysis, visualization, predictive analytics, polling and surveys, research, and data procurement. Position leads projects and project teams conducting such work and supports all manner of data analytics for staff engaged in ACLU of Florida public policy, civil rights, and advocacy initiatives.

Operates under limited supervision with significant autonomy, exercising initiative, innovation, and independent judgment in all aspects of the role.

Areas of Responsibility: 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead research and data analysis for major advocacy efforts and campaigns.
  • Clean, analyze, and visualize data from multiple sources to identify trends, disparities, and opportunities for impact.
  • Design and manage data dashboards, maps, reports, and visual content for use in public campaigns, internal decision-making, and media.
  • Build research plans, timelines, and infrastructure to support long- and short-term projects.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research, including predictive analytics, polling, and surveys.
  • Collaborate closely with policy, legal, field, and communications staff to support integrated advocacy.
  • Serve as a thought partner and data consultant to internal teams, helping staff define questions and use data effectively.
  • Lead and mentor junior staff or interns on data projects as needed.
  • Lead collaborations with academic and research institutions.
  • Evaluate tools and systems and recommend technology solutions to improve data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Support external communications and advocacy by producing data-informed content such as social media graphics, explainer visuals, and infographics.
  • Provides technical support to internal staff and departments for a varying array of diverse research and data analysis needs 
  • Collaborates on strategy planning and development initiatives regarding department objectives
  • Collaborates with the Policy and Advocacy team to support policy initiatives
Educational Background: 
● Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., statistics, data science, public policy, economics, sociology) or equivalent work experience.
Skills/Experience: 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • At least 4 years of experience in data analysis, research, or a related field, ideally in public policy, advocacy, or social justice work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., statistics, data science, public policy, economics, sociology) or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong proficiency in tools like SQL, R, Python, or Stata.
  • Proficiency with Airtable, Excel, and similar data managing tools.
  • Experience with data visualization, tracking and mapping tools such as Tableau, ArcGIS, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience turning complex data into accessible and persuasive content.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and equity, including racial and social justice.

Preferred but Not Required

  • Master’s or advanced degree in a related field.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Haitian Creole.
  • Experience working with voter files, census data, or large-scale administrative datasets.
  • Familiarity with CRMs like VAN, EveryAction, or Airtable.[1] 
  • Previous experience leading research collaborations or managing data teams.
Compensation/Benefits: 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation will be commensurate with experience, within the range of $60,000 to $81,000. The ACLU of Florida provides excellent benefits, including health and dental insurance with generous vacation, holiday and sick leave policies, professional development support, as well as an employer-matched Defined Contribution/401K Retirement Plan. Base vacation leave is 5 weeks per year (and six weeks per year after five years).
