The President & CEO is the leader of the organization, establishing a vision for Community Impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high performing leaders, staff, and volunteers. The President & CEO is the chief mobilizer, with the responsibility to leverage the power of relationships, networks, and resources across private, public, and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community. The President & CEO possesses a high level of broad business, management, and community change skills. The President & CEO is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good creating, resourcing, scaling, and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact.
The President & CEO is the steward of the United Way brand and understands the responsibility to grow and protect the reputation of the United Way. The successful candidate is responsible for building trust in the United Way and its relevance in the community. The President & CEO values networking and strives to leverage United Way’s breadth of community presence, relationships, and strategies.
Leadership
- Responsible for overall positive impact of the UWCDC’s strategies for meeting community needs and growing community resilience.
- Provide leadership in bringing about greater understanding and involvement concerning issues of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
- Provide leadership in developing the financial and social resources to ensure organizational longevity and ability to meet the community’s needs.
- Develop creative strategies and plans for achieving financial goals and assure appropriate staffing of the campaign structure.
- Develop and sustain resources required for community impact; network, create, and sustain mutually positive relationships with community decision makers, advancing both community interests and United Way interests.
- Effectively engage volunteers from around the community in support of UWCDC.
- Assure organization’s overall compliance with laws and regulations to ensure UWCDC is in good standing as a charitable organization under state and federal law and preserves its tax status.
- Ensures UWCDC conforms with United Way Worldwide standards.
- Maintain a leadership role among United Way’s constituencies.
- Advocate at the state and local levels for policies affecting the lives of UWCDC’s representative communities.
- Serves as a confident, articulate, and persuasive advocate for UWCDC to increase its visibility with private and public human service organizations and associations, advocates, lawmakers, government staff and agencies, the media, funders, and key community representatives.
- Directs contract negotiations with government agencies, subcontractors, and any other outside organizations.
Board Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Board to develop ongoing policy and strategic direction for the organization. This includes supporting the Board’s ongoing development and working towards implementation of John and Miriam Carver’s Policy Based Governance Model.
- Provide operational research, program information, and resource development information to support the Board in developing long-range goals.
- Analyze and interpret existing conditions, opportunities, and challenges in order to inform Board-level financial planning.
- Work with the Chief Governing Officer (CGO), namely the Board Chair, to effectively engage the board to identify and cultivate resource development opportunities.
- Work with the CGO (and Executive Committee) to develop the annual Board calendar and agenda. The CEO directs UWCDC staff to support the implementation of the Board calendar as needed.
- Provide operational data (dashboard style) to the Board at each meeting on key operational indicators as dictated by the Board calendar.
- Assist the Board of Directors in its ongoing recruitment and retention of members with the skills, knowledge, and relationships that are useful to the UWCDC’s organizational development.
Management/Administration
- Build and lead diverse, high performing teams, ensuring internal alignment and collaboration to achieve organizational results.
- Create a professional atmosphere that fosters the development of strong, effective teams and empowers staff through involvement and participation in decision-making.
- Enhance own leadership skills, delegate effectively, and ensure that tasks are completed on time.
- Maintain accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within policies set by the Board of Directors.
- Manage organizational spending, monitor budget compliance, and mitigate financial risks.
- Maintain stewardship and accountability for financial and capital resources, official records, operating budgets, and campaign collection and disbursement; understand fully the development and investment of resources and think comprehensively about the public and private resources suitable to meet those needs.
- Assure effective and prudent distribution of United Way resources that achieve overall organizational Ends.
- Assess organizational capacity to implement strategies and identify gaps in systems and staffing.
- Staff the organization with fully competent diverse professionals and delegate responsibilities/authority effectively.
- Promote continued professional development among staff, demonstrate and assure cultural competency of self, managers, and all staff.
- Supervise Senior Leadership positions, establishing individual development goals.
- Reports to the Board of Directors.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in the leadership and management of organizations of comparable size and mission. United Way experience preferred.
- Substantial experience working in the nonprofit management sector and interacting with diverse volunteers and Board of Directors.
- Working knowledge of non-profit fiscal management, including fund accounting and budgeting.
- Have and maintain unquestioned integrity, a long-term perspective, a strong sense of accountability, a practical ability to getting things done, wisdom, good judgement, a fair and thoughtful approach to management combined with the flexibility and courage to shift direction and experiment with new initiatives.
- Must demonstrate a high level of intelligence and intellectual curiosity as well as desire to explore new ideas and innovative approaches to solving problems.
- Demonstrated track record of promoting diversity and an ability to build collaboration with the community at large.
- Ability to elicit the confidence and respect of different types of stakeholders across all socio-economic, ethnic, and gender types.
- Experience developing partnerships, building diverse teams, and conflict management.
- Experience in building revenue and increasing philanthropic support.
- Experience in, or across multiple sectors, including nonprofit, public, and corporate environments.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, current vehicle insurance, and ability to use personal vehicle for UWCDC business throughout the regional service area.
- Willingness to travel.
- Must consent to and pass criminal background and full credit checks.
Compensation: Salary: $70,000-$100,000 DOE, plus a competitive benefits package.
