The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Government Grants Advisor in our National Center office located in Washington, DC.

The Government Grants Advisor is responsible for providing grants management support in both pre-award and post-award areas to the government grants team. This will include tasks related to timely and accurate development and submission of proposals for sponsored projects, interpreting complex government guidelines for funding and applying these in proposal development and submission; developing and revising budgets for proposals and grants using a variety of financial tools and systems; responsible for maintaining an electronic grants database for reporting of metrics to senior AHA leadership; assisting with obtaining AHA internal approvals for submissions; maintaining proposal information once submitted to agencies and taking action as necessary. On the post-award side, will work with finance, procurement, legal and program staff to ensure that all grant compliance obligations are met, providing support to the Principal Investigators with all post-award changes and reporting and serving as liaison on behalf of the government grants team. This includes sucbontracting, rebudgeting, and prior approvals from sponsoring agencies.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Responsible for the management of proposal development teams and provides input as necessary; prepares the administrative components of grant proposals e.g., formatting resumes or biosketches, filling in forms, formatting and collating appendices, finalizing proposals for submission. Ensures that proposal documents are input into the submitting system for a smooth and timely manner.
  • Provides award management support to existing AHA grants to ensure awards are managed in compliance with complex government regulations. Works with procurement and finance offices to execute subcontracts, revise budgets and obtain prior approvals from funding agencies for any award modifications. Provides support to program staff and Principal Investigators on all post-award tasks including reporting, communication and liaison with internal and external departments.
  • Monitors and researches funding opportunities as they arise through regular scanning of information resources, and prepares summaries for distribution to enable informed choices on whether AHA should apply. Develops extensive familiarity with AHA programs in order to effectively match opportunities to competitive strengths.
  • Maintains proposal and award documents in database and on SharePoint for easy access and reporting to AHA leadership. Able to pull reports on proposal success and award revenue and distribute them appropriately. Maintains application pipeline and six-month and annual proposal submission prospectus and provides updated statuses on each application as requested.
  • Assists with training of staff on general government grants matters, in addtion to compliance, budgeting and ensuring all grant-funded staff are kept apprised of all regulations related to government grants.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor Degree from a four-year college/university in a related field of study.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 15% of the time.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in pre-award, research administration, or related field, with experience in federal government grants.
  • Knowledge of the federal grant environment and different types of sponsoring agencies and their requirements.
  • Knowledge of grant budgeting and database management.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Fluency in using standard office software packages, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work well with people and establish effective relationships with AHA staff and with representatives of funding agencies.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of grant submission systems such as grants.gov and ASSIST
