The Strategic Partnerships Department of PPFA has an opportunity for a Director, African American Engagement. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Partnerships, this key role is part of a team that works on national partnership outreach and engagement with communities of color. This person is a leader in the national office as well as a resource to Planned Parenthood’s Affiliates, working with them to build and support their equitable partnerships and initiatives as related to the African American and Black communities, and strengthen Planned Parenthood’s relationships within existing racial justice, reproductive justice, and civil rights and faith based organizations and coalitions. The Director, African American Engagement will strategically utilize opportunities to elevate the voices and issues that are prominent within the African American community, while deepening PPFA’s relationships with those communities and leaders.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop a strategic plan for African American engagement that elevates and engages the community in Planned Parenthood’s public policy and campaign priorities.
  • Identify priority policy and public awareness campaigns (i.e. adolescent health, HIV/AIDS testing and treatment, STD prevention, testing and treatment, comprehensive sex education, contraception) that are pertinent to the African American/Black community.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the key staff of partner and allied organizations to both support our policy and advocacy agenda and to amplify issues that greatly impact the African American/ Black community.
  • Provide technical support to Regional Campaigns Directors and Planned Parenthood Affiliates in developing programs to broaden the base of support in African American communities.
  • Work with Planned Parenthood brand and marketing team in the creation of branded materials that appeal to the African American community; ensure that the process and outputs define who we are, what people can expect, highlight the value of Planned Parenthood as a health care provider, an educator and a social justice advocate.
  • Participate with the President, Chief Experience Officer, senior staff, development staff and others to raise funds for the ongoing support of and expansion of outreach initiatives.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to the African American Engagement Manager.
  • Work with the Organizing and Electoral Campaigns team and the Communications division on identifying political opportunities and plans for on­ the-ground electoral work.
  • Act as a strategic advisor and consultant to other PPFA  departments and divisions on the most effective ways to make use of organizational resources in order to create the most impactful outcomes for African American communities and communities of color.
  • Promote an organizational culture that embraces diversity as a core value - guiding strategic planning, program implementation and evaluation, staffing and internal and external relationships. Oversees the management of all AA and RJ relationships (in coordination with other relationship owners). 
  • Plays a strategic role within the CXO in visioning how we more broadly engage authentically with the Black and AA community, Consult closely with the new organizing role within the Organizing and Electoral Campaigns team that is dedicated to consulting to affiliates in their work with communities of color.
  • Oversee the management of new external partner engagement within African American/Black communities, helping to ensure that any new partner or ask receives appropriate follow-up and relationship management.
  • Convene and oversee the informal African American working group to coordinate African American constituency-related work across the organization Represent Planned Parenthood externally as The Director of African American Outreach and Engagement.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   
REQUIREMENTS / TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
  • 5-8 years of related work experience. 
PERSONAL QUALITIES /OTHER ATTRIBUTES
  • A strategic thinker, able to work closely and effectively build partnerships with other Planned Parenthood departments, divisions, and affiliates.
  • Well-connected in the African American advocacy space via existing relationships with advocacy and progressive organizations centering the African American/Black communities.
  • Able to expand Planned Parenthood’s reach into and connection with African American organizations and key individuals.
  • Media savvy, including with social media.
  • A good critical thinker and communicator; able to synthesize and clearly share information, both in writing and verbally.
  • Unflappable in situations of high stress and crisis.
