AmeriCorps is a National Service Program sponsored by the federal government that allows people the opportunity to serve in the communities where they live.
The United Way of Porter County AmeriCorps Program focuses on three main areas:
- Tutoring/Mentoring: AmeriCorps members serve as tutors and mentors in local elementary, middle and high schools in Valparaiso, Chesterton, and Portage.
- Career Advising: AmeriCorps Members serve as career advisors at local high schools to help prepare students for college. They help students with resume writing, college/academic program research, and interview training. They also provide financial literacy training.
- Capacity Building: AmeriCorps Members serve as capacity builders at local non-profits to recruit volunteers to either expand current programs or create new programs.
- 18 years of age at commencement of service.
- US Citizen, US national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the US.
- Have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate (or agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalency).
As an AmeriCorps member, you’ll gain new skills and experiences—and you’ll also find the tremendous satisfaction that comes from helping others. In addition, full-time members who complete their service earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to pay for college, graduate school or to pay back qualified student loans. Members who serve part-time receive a partial award. AmeriCorps members also receive a modest living allowance during their term of service. Members ages 55+ can donate their education award to their children, grand children and foster children. Loan forbearance is also available to AmeriCorps members during their term of service. Childcare and health insurance benefits are available for full-time 1700 hour positions.
