This position implements the marketing strategy & creates and executes communication efforts to support the programs of United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica. This position requires knowledge of both marketing tactics and visual communication design. Overall, the position supports UWVGU’s own initiatives like 2-1-1 Mid-York, R4K, and Young Leaders United, as well as all events & campaigns intended to generate revenue to invest in our focus areas: the health, education, income, & basic needs of the community.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manages community outreach to raise visibility and ensure maximum community participation.
  • Creates and plans marketing tactics for each of United Way’s initiatives.
  • Creates and maintains visual representation and creative pieces including graphic design and layout. Oversees approved outsourced projects including video production.
  • Plans & executes communication strategy via traditional Public Relations channels and digital marketing including press releases, social media, e-newsletters, crisis communications & website
  • Acts as the organization’s lead media contact, and on site media coordinator, handling both short- and long-term public relations activities, as well as media buying, strategies and execution.
  • Speaks on behalf of the organization at the direction of the Executive Director or Director of Development and Marketing.
  • Work with Resource Development department to create and update individual company ePledge websites to reflect United Way branding, messaging in conjunction with each individual company.
  • Complete reports on time as required. Example: bi-monthly Board of Directors report, Reports for external funders.
  • Plan, monitor and implement annual budget for Marketing activities, including tracking expenses, invoices and reporting.
  • Execute organization brand strategy in accordance with United Way Worldwide Brand guidelines. Ensure all projects follow brand guidelines.
  • Participate in and carry-out agreed upon strategic directives.

  • Primary liaison and coordinator of Marketing & Communications committee.
  • Stays knowledgeable of sector research (both inside and outside of United Way). Researches and shares best practices, trends, and development trends regularly.
  • Performs other duties in support of United Way operations and functions, as assigned, including assistance with pledge processing and fund-development efforts.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree or five years of experience required. BS in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications or related field preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills verbally and written.
  • Demonstrated command of digital marketing and functions.
  • Demonstrated command of public relations and media relations.
  • Demonstrated command of graphic design skills with preferred proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
