Disaster Program Support Consultant

We have an exciting opportunity for a Disaster Program Support Consultant.

This position will be located remotely, and the expected work hours will be approximately 15 hours/week, involving 20% travel.

Objective: Serve as an HFHI liaison and provide direct support to US affiliates on disaster preparedness and response programming, toward the implementation of US affiliate disaster response operations and long-term recovery programs.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Methodology: Desk review, virtual and potential in-person coordination with HFHI DR3, virtual and potential in-person support to affiliates

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as HFHI liaison to assigned US affiliate(s) post-disaster and lead virtual or in-person coordination during response phase (up to 30-90 days)
  • Perform needs assessment aligned with affiliate capacity and level of damage in community from a DR3 technical perspective
  • Provide reports to DR3, contributing to information management in response
  • Provide leadership and guidance to affiliates in developing a response strategy and program design through Habitat's Pathways to Permanence framework, ensuring risk reduction strategies are at the core of the recovery effort
  • Assist affiliate in launching disaster response operations
  • Facilitate disaster preparedness activities (below)
  • Network with key disaster recovery organizations and partners
  • Provide regular reports to HFHI and other stakeholders
  • Review/consult on concept notes and proposals
  • Oversee the process of capturing lessons learned and promising practices
Educational Background: 
Associate's Degree or equivalent work experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5 years of related work experience
  • Knowledge and experience in disaster response programming
  • Strong leadership, planning, organizational and diplomatic skills required
  • Ability to maintain cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Ability to travel and deploy for limited periods of time and operate in diverse settings
  • Computer literate and knowledge of satellite phones, GPS systems and VHF/HF radio communication
  • Strong writing and communication skills required
