We have an excellent opportunity for a Development Consultant. The location is flexible within the SouthWest Affiliate (SWA) provided the location allows for cost effective and efficient travel within the affiliate.SWA consists of Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.

The SWA Development Consultant position is responsible for advancing the American Heart Association’s mission through leadingstaff to plan and execute successful corporate revenue-generating campaigns and other cause campaigns from which mission-related research and activities are funded. Ensures effective implementation of Affiliate development plans and policies within assigned markets. Proactively collaborates with staff across the affiliate and across the nation to optimally enhance the success of the AHA.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Actively fosters and directly participates in a culture of accountability aligned with achieving Affiliate Key Results and executing the strategies developed to fulfill the American Heart Association’s and SWA’s overall annual and strategic plans.
  • Consults on the planning and execution of development campaigns in assigned markets and throughout the SWA in accordance with best practices and affiliate goals to ensure the success of the affiliate. Provides expertise, coaching, and strategic guidance for fundraising events with focus on Active Events including Heart Walk and CycleNation, and other Curve 2/cause campaigns to ensure aggressive revenue growth. Drives the culture of innovation in SWA to increase revenue through supporting and developing new fundraising strategies.
  • Conducts regular strategy meetings (combination of in-person and virtual) with assigned markets to ensure best practices and timelines are being followed. Gaps and campaign risks are identified, and strategies are developed to overcome barriers and increase results. Plays a leadership role in all strategy meetings, including event evaluation and planning meetings, keeping the team focused on specific actions and plans that will move them to achieve event and annual goals.
  • Regularly analyzes campaign reports to identify trends for overall affiliate progress and specific campaign progress – for all SWA campaigns.Communicating these trends and strategies Identify to Field Directors, EDs, VPs, and SLT members. Develops and manages affiliate blitzes as needed to drive strategies and immediate success on lead indicators.
  • In collaboration with Affiliate Development Trainer, support training event staff on best practices and materials from AHA National Center and SWA that supports revenue generation and volunteer recruitment/management. Identifies and creates tools as necessary. Supports Affiliate Development calls by identifying key strategic focuses, recruiting speaker and managing call-to-actions delivered to field staff.
  • Ensures integration and collaboration of staff across functions and markets to maximize donor contribution, sponsorship potential and impact. This includes but is not limited to Development, Health Strategies, Communications, Advocacy, and Mission Advancement.
  • At the discretion of the VP of Strategic Development and Affiliate SVP leadership, provide on-site coverage and campaign management to divisions as needed to help ensure continuity and campaign momentum.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree preferred. College coursework combined with related experience may be substituted for a degree. Related experience may be substituted as follows: 1 ½ years’ experience equates to 1 full-time year of higher education.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 3 years of successful experience in fundraising is required, 5 years is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience with recruiting and managing volunteers and/or direct management experience is preferred.
  • Proven fundraising experience in exceeding goals, securing top-level sponsors and recruiting C-suite volunteers as campaign leadership is required.
  • Proven success with engaging companies by raising significant participant income thru vendor campaigns, executive challenges, and other key participant income strategies is required.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with the proven ability to analyze numbers to impact campaign trends and build strategies on where to pivot to impact future results. Skill in synthesizing data succinctly.
  • Knowledge of sales strategies and strong negotiation skills is required.
  • Excellent influencing skills - experience in consultation to staff over which there is no reporting relationship.
  • Ability to form and develop strategic relationships and ability to learn and follow the strategic direction of the AHA. Quick learning and adaptability skill is required.
  • Proven ability to understand and navigate corporate cultures with the ability to plan and conduct meetings.
  • Strong bottom-line mentality.
  • Ability to conceptualize, reason through problems, make effective decisions and develop alternative solutions.
  • Strong skills in organizational communication, process management, team building, conflict resolution, mental flexibility and multi-tasking are critical for success in this role.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Must be willing and able to travel through a 6-state affiliate including overnight stays up to 50% of the time.
