This position performs general accounting functions including participation in internal and outside audit. Employee works with some independence subject to established United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona policies and procedures, referring to supervisor for consultation on significant deviations or unusual programs.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position, reporting to the Accounting Manager.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Reconciliation of Subsidiary Ledgers to General Ledger

  • Reconcile monthly bank statements for assigned cash and investment accounts, research outstanding checks over 90 days, create and issue returned check notices.
  • Verify and reconcile various accounts to the general ledger on a monthly basis, including allocations payable, suspense/audit account(s), and pledges receivable accounts.
  • Assist in preparation of yearly schedules for independent audit.
  • Maintain audit schedules throughout the year whenever possible.

Accounting Administration

  • Assist with annual fixed asset inventory, maintain records, and make changes when necessary for acquisition or disposal of property.
  • Confirm payments to agencies when requested by independent auditors.
  • Complete assigned special projects providing financial information and reports to outside parties.
  • Work closely with other accounting functions, ensuring accuracy and cohesiveness of department.
  • Maintain financial files and records.
  • Backup Accounts Payable and serve as cross-functional backup for other positions as assigned.

Customer Service

  • Responds appropriately to requests for information in a positive manner.
  • Directs incoming requests for information to other divisions as necessary.
  • Provide excellent customer service as a component of all job duties.

Administrative Functions

  • Perform duties in accordance with UWTSA policies and procedures such as attending staff meetings, completing accurate and timely timesheets and expense reports as assigned.
  • Assist in developing policies, procedures, schedules, and assignments to support department and/or organizational goals and objectives.
  • Assist in training and cross training staff and volunteers, serve as backup to staff, and act as project lead as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance from an accredited university or college.  Some accounting experience preferred, not-for-profit a plus.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Knowledge of the accepted principles and practices of accounting and auditing and their application to fund accounting systems.
  • Demonstrated excellent written/verbal communication skills, including clear, concise, and accurate written narrative and financial documents, grammar, spelling, and selection/organization of appropriate presentation method/vehicle.
  • Demonstrated customer service, problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated skills using Windows-based software, including Internet browsers, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and graphics software, to generate meaningful and comprehensive documents, and materials.
  • Familiarity with and ability to use Google applications, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, G-mail, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of UWTSA staff as well as diverse volunteers, donors, community partners, vendors, and other constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to tactfully handle stressful situations, negotiate and resolve conflicts, maintain confidentiality, and to respect and observe organizational protocol.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, and adjust it as required by changing activities and ability to travel to work in a variety of locations throughout the metropolitan Tucson area whenever required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, daily access to reliable vehicle and able to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range:  $38,000 to $42,000 DOE
