Summary:

The primary function of the Activity Specialist is to support the  purpose and values of Easterseals Capper Foundation (“ESCF”) by exhibition the following behaviors: ability and commitment to identify strengths, genuine respect for diverse perspectives and life styles, a capacity to listen and reflect, skill and creativity in helping people become more aware and confident of their own abilities, to help the individual or group assume decision-making and action, knowledge about how to gain access to information and ability to reflect and criticize ongoing process, including one’s own role in those processes.

Basic Responsibilities:
  • Develop, disseminate, and implement a daily menu of social/leisure/therapeutic activities to stimulate peer interaction, promote constructive leisure time and motivate persons to function at their maximum level of independence.
  • Ensure activities are purposeful, meaningful, and afford choices to persons served.
  • Document and report any significant event, problem or progress concerning the persons supported. 
  • Plan, coordinate and participate in swimming, on site activities and community outings, which includes driving the ESCF vehicles when necessary.
  • Plan, coordinate and participate in special activities such as holiday parties or other events.
  • Provide oversight of purchase, inventory, and storage of activity supplies.  Reorder supplies when needed.
  • Attend meetings as appropriate.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of program areas.
  • Assist with personal care, including toileting, feeding etc.
  • Encourage Direct Support Professionals (“DSPs”) to keep persons supported engaged in scheduled activities as outlined in their support plan.
  • Provide support during activities when needed.
  • Notify the Program Coordinators if there concerns about the services provided.
  • Liaison between the persons supported and employer.
  • Job coaching support to persons supported at their job site as needed.
  • Monitor and encourage persons supported to follow their chosen work and/or activity schedule.
  • Assist with all other duties as requested.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma.
  • Associates degree in therapeutic recreation, activity therapy or social or behavioral science is preferred.
  • Read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Must be able to pass background checks and drug test per agency procedures.   
  • Prior experience working with specific population served, e.g. persons with DD, older adults, dementia, dual-diagnosed, etc. is preferred.
