A successful Senior Accountant combines excellent analytical skills with a thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).  Primary responsibilities include ensuring that all United Way Suncoast (UWS) revenue and expense streams are recorded in accordance with GAAP and United Way Worldwide (UWW) standards.  She/he is responsible for general ledger reconciliations and month-end closing process including accounting for various government, corporate and private foundation grants and restricted contributions supporting UWS.  This includes working collaboratively across the organization to ensure all grant and restricted funds are properly spent, accounted for, and reported. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Has oversight of the accounts payable function.  Reviews and approves invoice coding completed by the Staff Accountant.  Reviews and posts invoice entries completed by the Staff Accountant.  Approves ACH batches for transmission.
  • Reviews grant general ledgers for allowable expenses, posts grant revenue journal entries, and updates grant revenue schedules on a monthly basis.
  • Has oversight of the cash receipts function.  Reviews and approves cash receipt batches entered by the Staff Accountant.
  • Prepares and submits grant invoices, including any required documentation, to funders on a monthly basis and follow up on outstanding grant payments receivable.
  • Prepares and files required grant budget reports as needed.  Maintains a schedule of all grant reporting requirements for the organization and works with program managers to ensure all reporting requirements are met on a timely basis.
  • Monitors budget categories, spending rates and time restrictions to ensure all grants are on track to meet budgeted spending requirements.  Proactively communicate with program staff and others when grant expenses are not on track to meet budget requirements.
  • Tracks restricted revenue uses and releases temporarily restricted revenue on a monthly basis.
  • Completes assigned monthly reconciliations (accounts receivables, accounts payables, prepaids, etc.) and assists in maintaining monthly general ledger support book.
  • May provide staff training and guidance as required.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in accounting or related financial field; minimum five years of related experience.

Computer Skills:

  • Requires intermediate to advanced knowledge and application of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation computer software in P.C. environment.  Intermediate knowledge of databases and email software programs.   Experience with general ledger software.

  • Highly organized and attention to detail.  Ability to maintain confidential information is critical to this position.  Ability to write in a professional manner.
