United Way of the Wine Country is seeking a self-motivated team player to support our goals of increasing kindergarten readiness, third grade reading proficiency and ultimately high school graduation rates.

he Education Program Officer is a professional-level position responsible for coordinating the effective and successful implementation, evaluation and expansion of United Way’s Schools of Hope program region-wide working with multiple community partners (80%). This position is further responsible for managing the School Readiness Backpack program and Summer Reading Pack program (20%). This full-time position reports to the Executive Vice President.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The following duties are representative of the responsibilities of this position. These assignments may change as the needs and priorities of the organization evolve.

  • Program development, monitoring and implementation. Working in coordination with program partners, ensure quality delivery of United Way's education initiatives and programs, specifically Schools of Hope, School Readiness Backpacks, and Summer Reading Packs.
  • Volunteer recruitment, management and retention. Supervise the Community Benefit Coordinator position to develop strategies to increase volunteer recruitment and retention related to these programs. Oversee systems to track data related to screening and tracking volunteer participation.
  • Program monitoring and evaluation. Manage data collection and evaluation efforts for all education programs. In some cases, this will involve working with an outside evaluator and in other cases, evaluation will be done in-house.
  • Grants management. Participate in grant writing, tracking and reporting efforts as related to education.
  • Issues and trend analysis. Keep abreast of relevant issues through current events, research, trends, and the focus of other funders in the field by reviewing professional publications, attending conferences, meetings and other events. Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the priorities, strategies, and selection criteria for United Way's early education focus area.
  • External engagement. Maintain and develop relationships with policy makers, consultants, stakeholders, funders, grantees, and other key constituencies necessary to advance the vision and goals of the United Way of the Wine Country.
  • Internal engagement and collaboration. Work collaboratively and participate in cross-disciplinary teams with colleagues at United Way and provide support to volunteers.
  • Special ad hoc projects. Completing additional tasks as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree (or commensurate experience)
Skills/Experience: 
  • Passionate about UWWC’s mission and education
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, research skills and ability to follow through
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfort with speaking in front of medium sized audiences
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Capable of handling multiple tasks with competing priorities
  • Ability to meet deadlines while anticipating quickly changing needs
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Work both independently and as a collaborative team member
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, a professional, tactful demeanor, and to represent the organization in a positive manner at all times
  • High level of dependability showing up at work on time, following instructions, responding to management direction and soliciting feedback to improve performance
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to travel within Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino counties, as well as occasional trips to Humboldt and Del Norte counties if needed
  • Ability to operate office equipment, including copiers, printers, fax machines and scanners
  • Must have ability to perform work that requires sitting, walking, stooping, bending and lifting up to 25 pounds

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Experience working in education or with schools (former educator strongly desired)
  • Experience in program administration, grant writing, volunteer management and /or program evaluation (Must have 2+ years working in at least one of these areas)
  • Experience developing and leading successful partnerships and coalitions
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish
  • Master’s degree
Compensation/Benefits: 
  • $52,000-$56,000. Starting Salary DOE.
