In response to Hurricane Maria, Save the Children seeks to protect, promote and support breastfeeding and mitigate the risks of breastmilk substitutes (ie – infant formula, bottles, nipples) in children 0-2 years of age in underserved areas and for underserved communities (rural areas, hard to access communities and children, living in high poverty or living with disabilities). We will achieve this goal by undertaking activities to ensure children 0 to 2 years and families have increased access to supplies, equipment, information and support on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) and care by working through community-based structures and institutions caring for children under six years old. Save the Children will support parents of children under age 6 and institutions engaging with this age group to be better prepared for upcoming emergencies in relation to infant and young child feeding and care and nutrition practices. This position will report to the Early Childhood Development Senior Specialist

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Implement and monitor nutrition component of Save the Children’s Puerto Rico response.
  • Under the direction of the supervisor, manage nutrition activities, including distributions of Mother Baby Kit, Breastfeeding and Safer Infant Formula Kits, Mother Baby Areas, Infant and Young Child Feeding activities in targeted communities and through partnerships with daycares and other institutions caring for children under 2.
  • Support the identification of key strategic partners for implementation of nutrition programs, and the roll-out of peer to peer counseling in targeted communities.
  • Provide technical guidance and trainings to community-based organizations and local partners receiving subgrants and gifts in kind.
  • Build relationships and partnerships with formal and informal daycares to integrate SC-funded programming to protect, promote and support breastfeeding and mitigate the risks of infant formula and bottle use.
  • Contribute to the development of a monitoring and evaluation system for the nutrition program; ensure IYCF-E questions are included in community assessments.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversee infant and young child feeding education sessions at SC-supported community to ensure appropriate and consistent education messaging to mothers and other caregivers at all programming contact points and in the community.
  • Facilitate the design, implementation and monitoring of outreach activities.
  • Lead and monitor nutrition activities; prepare field visit plans and supervision checklists in advance of trips.
  • Prepare timely program reports for child protection activities and completed distributions.
  • Provide IYCF-E technical support and conduct orientations and trainings to build the capacity of Save the Children staff/volunteers, community leaders, day care staff, local partner staff and the community at large to promote consistent good practice.
  • Facilitate cross-sectoral programming, particularly to promote excellent communication and referral between Early Childhood Development, Resilience, Education, and Child Protection programming.
  • Coordinate with key partners (e.g. HHS, WIC, local lactation groups) and within relevant coordination groups such as the Coalition on Breastfeeding Promotion and Children’s Taskforce.
  • Support the development of proposals for funding of nutrition activities.
  • Prepare situation update reports on IYCF-E and nutrition to be included in internal and external reports and advocacy efforts.

Educational Background: 
You have a High School diploma
Skills/Experience: 
  • You have a minimum 3-4 years' experience in area of expertise.
  • You have learned knowledge and technical skills to support semi-complex tasks.
  • You have a professional level of specialized knowledge, technical/functional skills and attention to detail to manage complex tasks, programs or projects.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects.
  • Excellent Spanish communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent personal organizational skills, including time management, and ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions.
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles, including child safeguarding and data protection.
  • Knowledge and demonstrable commitment to promoting and supporting recommended infant and young child feeding practices.
  • Willingness to work and travel to challenging and remote environment and requirements.
  • Strong people management skills/experience and proven ability to create an environment which encourages team-working and motivates a team across various geographical areas.
  • Good analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Health/Public Health/Nutrition University Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Certified Breastfeeding Counsellor or training as peer lactation counsellor
  • Experience counselling mothers on infant and young child feeding and facilitating mother-to-mother support groups
  • Knowledge of the Operational Guidance on Infant Feeding in Emergencies, the Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes;
  • Proficiency in conversational English, both written and verbal, is highly desired
