Reporting to the Community Impact Education Program Officer, United Way California Capital Region’s Associate Literacy Coordinator is a key member of the Community Impact team with high quality and high volume expected output. 

The Associate Literacy Coordinator will be part of the United Way Experience Corps (EC) Program and work closely with the Literacy Program Coordinators and Literacy program Officer. This program is funded by a grant from AARP Foundation. The program creates opportunities for older adults to take part in vital public and community service while supporting early childhood literacy. Experience Corps volunteers work as teams to provide children with mentoring and tutoring services in the United Way Region. These mentors support schools, teachers and students by working in one-on-one, small groups and classroom settings — helping children to develop literacy skills. This position is a grant-funded position and is contingent upon the renewal and expansion of the United Way Experience Corps Tutoring Program. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, monitoring, evaluation and coaching of school site literacy volunteers to uphold fidelity to the Experience Corps Program Model
  • Collaborate with Literacy Program Coordinators to facilitate volunteer information sessions and volunteer recruitment including interviews, onboarding and managing EC volunteer outreach
  • Coordinate and track volunteer processing including background check, TB test and volunteer training completion
  • Act as volunteer point of contact and provide support as necessary between volunteers, Literacy Program Coordinators and school staff
  • Replenish program supplies at EC school sites and collect forms and data from volunteers to be entered into the program database
  • Coordinate meetings between school site staff, volunteers and other EC program staff every other month
  • Collect, organize, track and analyze program data and prepare program reports
  • Promote Experience Corps program to the public, key stakeholders, families and funders
  • Attend training, educational sessions and conferences as needed
  • Collect and submit success stories about the program and participants for marketing purposes
  • Addresses both volunteer and teacher needs, facilitating conflict resolution when needed
  • Participate in strategic planning and budgeting efforts as needed
  • The Associate Literacy Coordinator may be asked to prepare fiscal reports, track program expenses and supports salesforce data input, retention and maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Associate’s degree from an accredited two-year college with major course work in education, social services or public health, or a related field and 1 year experience working with volunteers.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of literacy services targeting high need communities and schools
  •  Experience with project management and administration of volunteer programs preferred
  • Understanding of techniques of positive customer service and public relations
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks at a given time, while maintaining the attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments
  • Fast mover and thinker with high level of creativity and thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Working knowledge of United Way and its mission
  • Self-starter with outstanding work ethic and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills & organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in groups
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, including the ability to communicate well in a variety of settings with a variety of stakeholders
  • Ability to use independent judgment and make sound decisions
  • Ability to build and retain quality relationships
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and collaborate with other organizations and volunteers
  • Ability to appropriately represent United Way as a public spokesperson
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook 

DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Services or related field preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with youth literacy programs 
  • Familiar with financial tracking and budgeting concepts 
  •  Salary commensurate with experience
