About this opportunity

As Membership Development Manager, you will play a critical role in winning paid family leave for everyone in the US, because our member’s voices and the experiences of impacted communities are at the center of all aspects of our work.

In this role, you will report to the Senior Director of Campaigns and Grassroots Advocacy. You will have the opportunity to scale our membership program and build the ground game that will be critical for achieving our legislative and political goals. You will develop new strategies and build on our current program to recruit, engage, and mobilize members to be passionate advocates and spokespeople for paid leave.

Areas of Responsibility: 

In this role, you will develop and execute a plan to build a bench of advocate spokespeople whose experiences influence the public narrative and elected officials, and guide PL+US’s decision-making.

  • Build a broad, diverse community of advocates in key communities geographic areas and who are trained and prepared to share their paid leave experience publicly.
    • Recruit dozens advocates to share their stories with paid leave, caregiving, and/or the pandemic, with a particular focus on expanding our network BIPOC, low-wage and gig worker advocates.
    • Train and develop PL+US advocates to become expert spokespeople who share their stories publicly and with elected officials and organize in their communities. 
  • Manage advocate relationships and develop our advocate network, including building and maintaining systems to track our advocates and keep them engaged with PL+US for the long-term.
    • Develop and implement systems to track advocates over time and keep them engaged with PL+US in an ongoing and consistent manner.
    • Create leadership opportunities to expand our advocates skills and engagement with paid leave advocacy and with PL+US.
    • Communicate regularly with advocates to build ongoing relationships and continued engagement with PL+US.
  • Develop and manage relationships with partner organizations to expand the coalition of groups who are elevating paid leave stories and storytellers.
    • Work with partner organizations to expand PL+US pipeline of paid leave advocates.
    • Support partner organizations in recruiting and training paid leave advocates from their audiences, and mobilizing for paid leave policy.
  • Develop our advocate network to become an active, engaged, and powerful grassroots force for paid leave, and mobilize them to take action:
    • Elevate prominent storytellers on the national stage (national media hits, public events, meetings with national political leaders, etc).
    • Ensure advocates have frequent and regular opportunities to engage with PL+US and take action for paid leave, from LTEs to meeting with their elected officials.
    • Work with PL+US legislative, political, and communications teams to mobilize advocates in key moments for our campaign.
Skills/Experience: 

About you

You are the ideal candidate for this role if you have deep experience in grassroots organizing, outreach, recruitment, and training. You love working with people, developing one-on-one relationships, practicing radical hospitality with advocates, and supporting people to grow into powerful spokespeople and agents of change. You pay close attention to detail and are technologically savvy when it comes to modern tools of grassroots engagement, from Zoom to mass text outreach to enthusiasm for good CRM hygiene!

To be successful in this role, you'll need

  • Experience organizing in a political or issue advocacy context
  • Experience working with people most impacted by, or living on the frontlines of, a social issue
  • Experience designing and managing training or development programs for members, such as advocacy training or media spokesperson training
  • Strong project management skills, ability to translate goals into a plan and execute effectively 
  • Ability to effectively set priorities and manage time, especially in a virtual work environment 
  • Attention to detail and comfort using digital tracking and communications tools 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to be compassionate, culturally sensitive, self-aware, and excited to continually learn 
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to engage in anti-racism practices
  • Bonus if you have experience working effectively in coalition with partner organizations
  • Bonus if you have experience using EveryAction / NGP VAN or a similar CRM
  • Bonus if you are fluent or conversant in a language other than English

Job Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

  • Conduct business in fluent English
  • Operate a computer and work at a computer for sustained periods of time 
  • Participate in live virtual meetings over video conference and/or phone
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $70,125-$82,500/annually, based on qualifications and experience
