The Patient & Community Outreach Manager is to implement strategies in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s goals including: connect more patients with LLS, as soon after diagnosis as possible; provide ongoing support, education, and access to quality care; and build healthcare provider and community relationships to increase referrals.  The Patient & Community Outreach Manager will provide or coordinate information, services and outreach to patients and their caregivers, survivors, and healthcare professionals in their coverage areas.  This role will serve as a key mission "expert" for the chapter(s) for which he or she is responsible.   

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Create and maintain deep engagement with, and support for, patients throughout their cancer journey providing ongoing support, education and access to quality care;
  • Promote Information Specialists as an essential point of initial contact, inside and outside of LLS, for disease, treatment and support information. Foster shared constituent relationship management responsibility for handling IRC patient referrals and related follow-up;
  • Develop and support a strong patient and community outreach volunteer structure to help implement patient and community outreach strategies; identify volunteer opportunities to better reach underserved communities through provider and community outreach;
  • Build mission committees comprised of local oncology professionals and key stakeholders to build relationships with LLS chapters and to assist with patient outreach and events. Implement  an effective, timely and ongoing communication strategy to ensure relevant information about patient and community outreach strategies and goals are delivered to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Conduct community-based patient education programs in select markets and underserved areas;    
  • Partner with campaign and advancement to provide information about the LLS mission to internal and external stakeholders, including staff, potential volunteers, donors and funders;
  • Engage patients, caregivers, and health care professionals to volunteer for campaign, advancement, and mission-related activities;
  • Partner with advocacy staff to identify advocates and patient stories and maintain engagement in policy initiatives.
  • Collaborate and partner with internal stakeholders including Executive Directors, Patient & Community Outreach Managers, Campaign, Chapter and Home Office staff to ensure joint planning, mutually beneficial support, and effective advancement toward LLS’s overarching goals and strategies;
  • Ongoing management of budgeted resources;
  • Ongoing assessment of the need in access, services, and education for patients and providers in the chapter area;
  • Timely compliance with all reporting requirements;
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the LLS mission and programs to promote the field and campaign initiatives;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
BA or BS; advanced degree or equivalent experience a plus 
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3 - 5 years of progressively responsible related experience
  • Healthcare educational background preferred
  • Experience and skills in relationship and network building, volunteer development and educational programming
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be able to articulate the LLS Mission (Research, Patient & Professional Programs, Advocacy/Policy) to a wide audience 
  • Account management experience a plus
  • Ability to leverage relationships and negotiate agreements
  • Strong healthcare knowledge base with oncology experience preferred
  • Strong problem-solving, priority-setting and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently, thrive under pressure and perform multiple tasks
  • Broad cultural competency
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and articulate science-based policy goals
  • Fundraising experience a plus
  • Experience working in a matrix environment a plus
  • Strong computer skills required

 Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Must reside within the chapter area(s) he or she manages
  • Position may require 25% to 50% travel; night and weekend work may be required
