The Director-Government and Foundation Relations (D-GFR) is responsible for creating and implementing strategies and building relationships that will maintain and expand revenue within our portfolio of Government and Foundation Grants and Contracts. In partnership with the Community Impact Team, Finance Team, and Resource Development (RD) Team, the D-GFR will maximize grant growth through establishing and growing meaningful relationships with government and foundation influencers/stakeholders to acquire new grants, especially from regional and national funders, while retaining UWCW’s current grants and contracts.
The D-GFR is responsible for overseeing the creation and implementation of a 5 year vision and strategy for government and foundation grants revenue to support our core program strategies and our organizational vision of dismantling the impacts of poverty on children and families in our region. In addition the D-GFR will be responsible for developing metrics and goals for leadership, CI, and RD staff, creating internal grants acquisition and management systems, and managing our ongoing relations with key government and foundation stakeholders.
Strategic Grants Planning & Implementation - 40%
- Creates both an annual operating plan and five-year grants strategy to maintain and expand our relationships with decision-makers and increase revenue through government and foundations. Manages the action steps and results from these efforts.
- Tracks revenue generation throughout the year and provides monthly projections against goal, with a strong emphasis on understanding and accuracy of revenue projections
- As part of five-year grants strategy, specifically focuses on increasing national and regional government and foundation relationships and grant acquisition, intentionally expanding this part of our grants portfolio
- Works with Grants Manager to develop grants and contract management, reporting, and analytical tools to advance the planning, acquisition, management, and execution of grant proposals.
- The D-GFR will track grant and contract revenue generation, retention, visits, and key activity throughout the year, provide regular activity status, update projections to target, and conduct the appropriate stakeholder analysis to build and refine goals.
Grants Team and Strategy Management - 40%
- Leads the Grants Team and other staff in the development of annual grants plans including action steps needed to engage government and foundation stakeholders on a year-round basis with United Way and to secure additional financial support for United Way, including but not limited to maintaining support for our early learning and high school graduation initiatives.
- Manage, facilitate and supervise activities related to grant renewals, prospecting and compliance reporting by the grants team and other UW staff
- Develop, manage, evaluate, and refine a grants development process that can be utilized by UW staff to prospect, request, acquire, and manage grants throughout the organization
- Create and manage the grants team expense budget and contributed revenue goals each fiscal year
Cross Functional Grant Team Leadership - 20%
- Creates and oversees the implementation of cross functional grants teams to support the acquisition and management of individual grants and contracts
- Works effectively with other functions at United Way including CI, RD, finance, and operations staff to provide appropriate support and value to government and foundation stakeholders and community partners
- Fosters creative thinking and facilitates future partnerships with existing and new government and foundation partners
- Working with cross functional staff and community partners when appropriate, the D-GFR will drive the execution of grants plans and manage the action steps and results from these efforts
- Works with the President/CEO, Chief Development Officer, Chief Impact Officer, and UW Board to manage strategic government and foundation stakeholder engagement on an on-going basis
Goals and Objectives - Daily
- Develops metrics and objectives for grants team to ensure staff members are held accountable for assigned objectives
- Works with Grants Manager to ensure timely grants reporting, analysis and communication
- Achieves annual revenue goals for government and foundation grants, including specific metrics to be included in annual performance objectives
- Develops and executes a comprehensive plan to successfully deploy staff and volunteer resources against revenue objectives
- In partnership with the Grants Manager, maintains accurate and detailed donor and account records in customer relations management system in order to analyze the effectiveness of the plan against delivering objectives

Staff Leadership and Development - Daily
- The D-GFR is responsible for coaching and managing high-performance staff to create vision and strategies to enhance relationships between United Way and government/foundations.
- Selects, guides, motivates, and participates in the training, professional development, and evaluation of direct reports
- Provides goal-setting, visioning, leadership, and strategic direction for grants strategy
- Directs and manages grants staff activities. Ensures that team operates in an integrated fashion with other teams and departments in order to advance grants strategy and organizational goals
- Responsible for accurate and timely completion and/or approval of organizational documents, including but not limited to performance reviews, professional development plans, goals and objectives, timekeeping, expense and travel reimbursements, credit card reports, requisitions, and ongoing documentation of performance accomplishments and areas requiring improvement

Technical Knowledge:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Outlook required (currently used organizationally)
- Proficient computer skills (familiarity with customer relationship management systems and electronic giving preferred)
- Must have valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle
Physical Requirements:
- Work is primarily performed indoors, within an open office setting with a moderate noise level and occasional exposure to scents.
- Frequently required to sit/stand at computer in a stationery position.
- Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity equipment, such as copy machine, printer, phone, and fax machine.
- Frequently required to move about inside the office for meetings, access to information, office equipment, etc.
- Frequently required to travel locally for meetings that occur in other office settings.
- May be required to travel nationally for meetings, trainings, and conferences in other office settings on multiple occasions during the year.
