The Development Specialist is responsible for coordinating and executing cost effective fundraising events in order to meet the fundraising objectives of the March of Dimes in the assigned market. The position acts as a liaison internally working with all fundraising team members and between the March of Dimes and the community as an agent of the organization.
Principle roles and responsibilities include revenue development and volunteer leadership development. The position reports to the Executive Director.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Prospect Identification and Fundraising Plan: Conduct research to identify prospects and quantify opportunities for designated area of responsibility. Maintain constituent database to ensure accurate information is available for development of call plans; schedule appointments with prospects and constituents.
- • Lead Referral Development Plan: Develop relationships with constituents, referral partners, or existing volunteer leaders in order to obtain personal introduction to prospective constituents.
- • Constituent Presentations: Develop and present sales presentations in order to educate and inform top level constituents or prospects.
- • Recruit and Develop Volunteers: Identify candidates for volunteer roles for all event committees within the designated area of responsibility. Recruit qualified candidates and articulate goals and objectives and train volunteers to ensure optimal outcomes for events. Manage volunteers for designated fundraising events.
- Constituent Relationships: Maintain constituent relationships.
- Execute Events: Work with volunteer committees to effectively manage execution of all assigned fundraising events. This includes but is not limited to fundraising-related and logistics committees. Be the lead staff for data management, systems management, report generation, etc. for fundraising events and donors.
- Budget: Adhere to all event budgets and take advantage of opportunities to increase revenue and control spending in order to contribute to the achievement of the market’s goals and objectives.
- Communicate the Mission of the Foundation: Communicate the mission of the March of Dimes with staff, volunteers and within the community in order to connect current and prospective donors with Mission outcomes.

- Personnel Supervised: This position does not supervise personnel.
Position Scope, Contacts and Decision-Making
- Scope: This position implements operational activities for fundraising events and leads fundraising areas such as assigned March for Babies teams, special event auction, etc. within events as a fully skilled professional and participates in recommending standards and procedures.
- Contacts: This position represents the March of Dimes with other professionals and volunteers both internally and externally. Contacts are critical to motivating, negotiation with, developing and collaborating with others.
- Decision-Making: Decisions, or decisions this position leads in making, may have important consequences and may directly impact the fundraising success of the market.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred and/or directly related professional skills and experience.
Skills/Experience:
- Previous Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in fundraising and event execution.
- Physical Demands: May involve lifting and carrying boxes; may involve traveling by car or plane to meetings and training.
