The RSVP Director supports and advances United Way’s mission by managing the development and implementation of all Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) activities. This position helps to improve lives by ensuring that volunteer time and talent is aligned with producing positive results and measurable outcomes in the Community Impact areas of education, income and health.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages the day to day operations of the RSVP initiative including the program budget, evaluations, progress reports, and compliance requirements. Annually, compiles and prepares the data for the annual program grant renewal with the Federal government.
  • Creates, develops and conducts overall senior volunteer recruitment strategies that are aligned with United Way of Wapello County Community Impact focus areas and RSVP Corporation of National and Community Service (CNCS) performance measure requirements.
  • Creates and maintains collaborative partnerships necessary to identify/create/promote a continuum of senior volunteer engagement in the Community Impact focus areas and RSVP CNCS performance measures. Key external partners include targeted local non-profit agencies. Key internal partners include the Volunteer Engagement staff
  • Develops the capacity of targeted non-profit organizations to manage RSVP volunteers that is in alignment with program guidelines and expectations. Provides training, consultation and technical assistance in volunteer engagement for the organizations.
  • Represents RSVP & United Way through community networking and participating in activities that connect senior recruitment strategies to established Community Impact focus areas and RSVP CNCS performance measures.
  • Manages and directs the RSVP Coordinator position to ensure the best possible use of time and talent.
  • Designs and implements both individual and group recognition strategies for the RSVP volunteers. This includes hosting group events and creating a periodic newsletter.
  • Develops and implements community outreach programming such as community presentations and publicity materials that promote RSVP’s mission.
  • Keeps abreast of issues and trends in senior volunteering by networking with local, state and national sector leaders.
  • Fosters organizational teamwork by participating in special projects and organizational activities on behalf of RSVP.
  • Aligns work behavior and work based on the UWWC Code of Ethics and Organizational Values.

Additional Responsibilities

  • This position also initiates or is directed by the President, to perform additional duties or tasks to support the RSVP mission.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Relationship Building: Ability to establish and maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships with customers and coworkers.
  • Management Skills: Ability to achieve desired outcomes by setting goals and priorities that deliver results.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to recognize courses of actions that can be taken to handle to handle problems or potential problems, and apply contingency plans to solve those problems.
  • Presentation skills: Ability to effectively present information to a group.
  • Communications skills, Oral: Ability to send verbal messages, and listen to others’ responses in order to convey information.
  • Communication, Written: Ability to write concise, clear letters, reports, articles, or emails including proofing and editing.
  • Supervision: Ability to direct, support and motivate employees to meet performance goals.
  • Self-motivated: Ability to reach a goal or perform a task with little or no supervision.

Experience

  • Three to five years’ experience in the field of volunteer management as a supervisor or program director, including recruitment of volunteers.
  • Strong proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Products, including database programs.
  • Experience with community planning, community organization and working in a team planning process to bring a group to consensus.

Other Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of community agencies and non-profit groups.
  • Ability to empathize with and manage low income senior citizens.
  • Well-organized and detail oriented and able to work well with people across various socio economic backgrounds.
  • Must be able to take initiative, demonstrate leadership, work inter-dependently and produce consistently high quality work.
  • Valid driver’s license, dependable transportation and proof of adequate automobile insurance
  • Position is subject to a three part criminal history check which will include fingerprinting, statewide criminal history repository check and a National Sex Offender Public Registry Check.
