ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: Harm Reduction Coalition is a national advocacy and capacity-building organization that works to promote the health and dignity of individuals and communities who are affected by drug use. With offices in New York and California, we advance harm reduction policy and practice through five core programs:

1) harm reduction policy and advocacy;

2) national training and capacity building initiatives;

3) national and regional conferences;

4) publications and resources, and;

5) technical assistance on overdose prevention education, hepatitis C prevention and treatment, syringe access expansion, and the US opioid crisis.

 

Collectively, these core programs work toward our North Star Statement: Harm Reduction Coalition creates spaces and dialogue that help heal the harms of racialized drug policies.

 

JOB SUMMARY: The Staff Accountant is responsible for the agency's bookkeeping, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. This position requires an incredibly organized and detail-oriented person who is able to work as a team and consistently and accurately meet deadlines. 

 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accounts Payable: including; vendor maintenance; processing invoices, payment requests, and expense reports; allocating expenses to the proper GL accounts and cost centers; following up with vendors and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner. 
  • Accounts Receivable: including; processing payments; producing statement of accounts; collections on overdue accounts, if necessary; account reconciliation; and coordination with the Development and Conference departments to ensure payments are processed and reconciled appropriately. 
  • Banking, Petty Cash and Metrocards: Generate bank deposits and create associated bank entries. Acquire, issue and reconcile petty cash and metrocards. 
  • Payroll: Process fortnightly payroll, including deductions for benefits. Enter and allocate payroll journal entries and associated fringe.
  • Credit Card Management: including, communicating with staff to obtain proper supporting documentation, reconciling all credit card expenses and allocating expenses appropriately.
  • GL Maintenance and Monthly Close: Perform assigned month-end closing procedures, including review of accrued and prepaid expenses
  • Audits and Site Visits: With guidance from the audit lead, prepare and gather all necessary materials for audits and site visits, and ensure accuracy of documentation.
  • Administrative Functions: Perform necessary functions to support the Finance team, including but not limited to, filing, scanning and records retention. 
  • Assist with additional projects as determined by the Senior Accountant and the Deputy Director of Administration and Finance.
     
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in accounting or as a bookkeeper
  • A self-motivated team-player with strong common sense and solid interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented, with the ability and willingness to be hands-on and solve problems as they arise.
  • Strong computer skills. Must be proficient with Excel and accounting systems (ideally Fund EZ)

50-60k/year
