The Senior Director, Human Capital is responsible for all human resources functions of UWNYC including recruitment, compensation and benefits, employee relations, professional development, performance management, and employee engagement. They staff the Human Capital Committee of the Board and interface with people driving United Way Worldwide’s various talent initiatives.  The Senior Director needs to be a strong business partner and trusted advisor to department heads on the Executive Leadership Team and to the President and CEO. They will be supported by one manager-level direct report and share an executive assistant with Finance, Operations, Legal, and Administration functions.

The ideal candidate will be a generalist that demonstrates comfort and experience in every aspect of Human Resources Management and is committed to a career in the nonprofit sector. They will probably come from a smaller organization (UWNYC has a staff of approximately 80 people) where they have had to design and implement the full range of HR disciplines on their own, or from a much larger organization where they have held one or more specialist roles and are now looking for an opportunity to put it all together and lead the entire Human Capital function.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Compensation and Benefits 

  • Partners closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to manage employee compensation and benefits programs, including maintaining salary ranges, participating in outside surveys, conducting research, and working with managers to set hiring, promotion, and performance adjustments. Manages benefits and payroll administration through ADP, our Professional Employer Organization (PEO). Keeps abreast of compensation and benefits practices in our local market to ensure competitiveness.

Staffing 

  • Manages UWNYC’s recruitment process, partnering with hiring managers to ensure a smooth, respectful experience for candidates and all stakeholders and is in compliance with best practices. Partners with senior leadership to facilitate the onboarding of new hires and resourcing of interns, temps, Loaned Executives, and other resources. Oversees the maintenance of organization charts. Partners with Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to ensure that staff and structure support organizational strategic objectives. Handles staff terminations, including developing plans with the supervisor and department head, determining financial packages, jointly holding final meetings, engaging outplacement services when needed, and issuing separation and release documents with the support of VP, Legal and Administration.

Performance Management 

  • Leads UWNYC’s performance management processes in accordance with best practices and organizational capacity. This includes creation and maintenance of detailed job descriptions and the management and continuous improvement of how we manage and motivate performance against organizational, departmental, and personal performance goals. It also includes supporting supervisors in their performance management role and maintenance of employee files. Is professional and helpful in identifying and resolving performance challenges.

Employee Relations

  • Plays the lead role in dispute resolution, ensuring that all parties are heard and treated with respect. Structures processes to hear all parties and to engage them in owning and solving their problems. Partners with the VP, Legal & Administration to ensure that differences that have the potential to escalate are carefully managed, documented, and do not put UWNYC at risk.  Is trusted and ensures that all matters are treated with integrity and the highest amount of confidentiality possible.

Professional Development

  • Manages UWNYC’s professional development budget and collaborates with the ELT and supervisors to ensure that resources are allocated fairly, transparently, and strategically. Keeps abreast of United Way Worldwide’s professional development offerings and conferences. Ensures that staff have development plans and that supervisors are supported in providing a range of internal and external, formal and informal development opportunities.

Employee Engagement

  • Oversees the Staff Activities budget and the Staff-run Events and Activities Committee (EAC). Coordinates with the Volunteerism team to leverage opportunities for staff to be engaged in volunteer and donor events to the greatest extent possible. Leads the design and delivery of regular “All Staff” meetings and utilizes internal communications vehicles to keep staff informed and engaged. Establishes and maintains multiple channels to get staff feedback, including semi-annual “pulse surveys” to take the temperature of the organizational climate.

Compliance 

  • In partnership with the VP, Legal & Administration, stays current with human resource policy trends and the legal aspects of managing Human Capital. Initiates updating of the Employee Handbook and supervises its issuance. Develops, implements and trains on UWNYC-wide policies and procedures.

Board Relations

  • Staffs the Human Capital Committee and prepares materials for semi-annual meetings. Provides the Finance and Investment Committee with information regarding compensation and benefits in accordance with Committee charters and in collaboration with the CFO.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and SPHR or PHR certifications; Master’s in HRM or Organizational Development preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Track record of holding progressively responsible roles as an HR professional
  • Organizational development mindset with exposure to strategy development, change management, and restructuring practices
  • Proven track record of building innovative HRM programs and integrating human resource systems with business goals
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to present information to all levels of staff and to the Board
  • Experience working with a PEO preferred
  • A participatory management and leadership style that encourages collaboration, cooperation and personal growth
  • Knowledgeable about Federal and New York City and State laws, rules and regulations regarding human capital
  • Agility to embrace ambiguity while striving to create clarity
  • Superb interpersonal and negotiating skills
