OPPORTUNITY

The United Way of Metropolitan Nashville has a long and proud history of innovation, leadership and management on a variety of critical matters impacting the community.  As one of the strongest UW’s within the national network, the organization is focused on producing measurable results to ensure financial stability, educational well-being and improved health services for those who need it most.  Although the organization has achieved great success in fundraising and program development, the work is far from done.

The Nashville economic market is presently one of the most dynamic centers for business growth in the United States.  The past several years has seen increased diversification of industry as new businesses move to the region to establish their headquarters including corporate services, advanced manufacturing, supply chain, and technology.  While still recognized for the robust music and entertainment scene, Nashville has also evolved in to the health-care capital of the United States, home to some 300 health-related enterprises. More than two dozen higher education institutions are located in the State’s Capital. Further, this growing and vibrant economy is attracting young professionals to the area, and the city’s downtown responding to this new energy by developing condominium projects, restaurants and nightlife.

The incoming President & CEO will play an integral role in continuing to enhance the organization’s rich history as a community leader while evolving the United Way’s offerings to align with the ever-evolving needs of the business community and social sector. The President & CEO will be a convener for collective impact, and an advocate in promoting the mission of the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville while responding to the needs of the local community.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

The United Way, led by a board of Nashville CEO’s and community influencers, works diligently to advance the common good in the Nashville community by creating scalable solutions focused on improving education, helping people achieve financial stability, and promoting healthy living.  Last year alone, nearly 25,000 people gave, advocated and volunteered with United Way Metropolitan Nashville to ignite community-based and community-led solutions that strengthen the cornerstones for a good quality of life.  In 2016 the United Way generated over $21 million in revenue to fund work in the Nashville community in three areas of investment:

EDUCATION

United Way of Metropolitan Nashville’s goal is to enable all children to succeed in their educational journey. This happens by providing access to books, preparing them for kindergarten, and instilling a love for learning. Each of the steps along United Way’s education pathway are strategic in building a child’s chances for educational success, and combating the challenges that often impede that progress.

FINANCIAL STABILITY

United Way of Metropolitan Nashville endeavors to create stable financial futures for individuals and families. We provide access to job training, financial wellness classes and more.  Our volunteer experts, working with partners from all sectors of society, connect people to the resources they need to gain solid ground and provide Nashvillians with opportunities to achieve long-term financial stablity. 

HEALTH

United Way is building a healthier, more resilient community in Nashville by promoting healthy eating and physical activity, expanding access to quality health care and integrating health in to early childhood development. We strive to provide Nashvillians with the tools they need to pursue healthy lifestyle choices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The President & CEO is accountable to the Board of Directors and provides leadership to preserve the rich legacy and build on the momentum established by the United Way in accordance with its powerful mission and vision. The President & CEO partners with the Board in building the strategic vision for the future of the organization, and provides overall leadership to establish long-range goals, and innovative strategies to continue to grow impact of the organization.  The President & CEO motivates, inspires, and convenes the local community and it’s multitude of stakeholders to maximize collective impact in the Nashville region.  The President & CEO is a bold and innovative leader who articulates the vision and mission of United Way, furthering the organization’s goal to improve education, help Nashvillians achieve financial stability, and promote health living.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

Organizational Leadership and Management:

  • Provides inspiring leadership and ensures the internal culture supports the mission and promotes synergy and collaboration across the organization.
  • Develops and leads the implementation of United Way’s long-term strategic plan, in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • Builds impactful relationships with the local nonprofit community, commercial and industry, foundations and government partners.
  • Demonstrates an energetic, entrepreneurial nature that combines leadership and intellectual curiosity with practical management skills.
  • Ensures all operations, human and financial resources are sound and aligned to provide the highest impact and implementation.
  • Maintains the accuracy and integrity of financial information, reporting and disclosure requirements, internal controls, and management information systems.

External Affairs and Fundraising:

  • Serves as the organization’s primary spokesperson, brand champion, and advocate, increasing the United Way’s visibility and reputation with key stakeholders.
  • Develops cutting-edge strategies and approaches to address the changing social and economic landscapes impacting the organization’s mission, vision, and activities.
  • Ensures the mission is represented to appropriate audiences, in local, state, and regional media.
  • Actively participates in the United Way’s long-term fundraising efforts to secure significant investments from a variety of sources.

Board Engagement:

  • Engages and collaborates with Board members to set the organization’s strategic direction and policies, enabling the United Way to adapt to changing needs within the community.
  • Maintains an authentic partnership with the Board to shape future momentum of the organization.
  • Works with Board and staff leadership to identify, recruit and cultivate new Board members and committee chairs that best fit the organization's values and strategic objectives.
  • Oversees the preparation of annual operating plans and budgets for review and approval by the Board.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will be a passionate and enthusiastic advocate for the mission of the United Way and committed to improving education, helping people achieve financial stability, and promoting healthy lives.  The organization is seeking a highly credible and proactive professional with demonstrated executive leadership experience with an organization of similar size and scope.

The President & CEO should embody the following characteristics:

  • A strong and inspirational leader who will build collaborative relationships with community partners and establish trusting alliances with local nonprofit organizations.
  • A courageous and visionary executive who will work with the board of directors to establish long-terms goals to continue to grow the organization and respond to the changing needs of the Nashville community. 
  • Proven track record for team building and ability to leverage the diverse skills and personalities of a dynamic and highly effective volunteer board of directors.
  • Proven management, business and financial acumen.
  • A charismatic and sophisticated communicator who will be a strong advocate in promoting the mission of the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville with key constituents such as the business community, government leaders and peer organizations.
  • Successful in growing top line revenue, establishing innovative sources of revenue and driving sustainable growth.
  • Keen analytic, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities that enable sound decision-making.
  • Strong professional ethics, integrity and accountability in all actions.

EDUCATION

An undergraduate degree from an accredited university is required; an advanced degree from an accredited university is preferred.

COMPENSATION
