A dynamic and results-oriented Vice President of Communications (VPC) is key to United Way of Stanislaus County’s (UWSC) commitment to improve education, health, and financial stability results in Stanislaus County. To act on this commitment, UWSC has entered into a partnership with Stanislaus County Focus on Prevention (SCFoP), and has committed to align its grantmaking, communication and other efforts in service of advancing SCFoP’s five results for Stanislaus County families:
- Our families are healthy—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
- Our families are supported by strong and safe neighborhoods and communities.
- Our children and young people are getting a first-rate education—from cradle to career.
- Our families are participating in and supported by a healthy economy.
- Our families and neighbors who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, permanently escape homelessness.
UWSC’s new backbone role for SCFoP provides an extraordinary opportunity for engaging others in a new story about how UWSC is promoting community impact objectives by aligning investments and leveraging resources, including and well beyond those resources raised directly by UWSC.
Leadership
- Models visionary, adaptive, and collaborative leadership with staff, Board of Directors, and community partners, and promotes a culture that reflects UWSC’s core values of compassion, integrity, transparency, collaboration, and innovation.
- Promotes strong and effective teamwork by engaging staff and others in decision-making as appropriate, and communicating openly and honestly.
- In close partnership with the President/CEO, champions robust engagement by Board of Directors, staff, funders, and volunteers in broadcasting a coherent, consistent, and compelling story about UWSC, including its efforts and community impact results.
Management and Administration
- Recruits, hires, and retains highly competent, diverse professionals to ensure effective and efficient delegation of authority. Promotes staff members’ continued professional development and cultural competency.
- Mentors staff to strengthen their performance and leadership skills, including their capacity for effective communication, teamwork, execution of goals and responsibilities, and continuous process improvements.
- Ensures integrated, effective, and efficient systems to support operational and administrative functioning—e.g., computer and technology, and staff and volunteer training.
- Develops organizational work plans and on-going systems for monitoring progress of implementing organizational priorities.
- Manages operational exposure by being informed of and responding in a timely way to legal, insurance, and financial requirements and risks.
- Drafts the Communications department’s annual budget and manages actual expenditures to projected amounts.
- Reviews the budget to support future organizational capacity needs in alignment with UWSC’s Strategic Plan projections.
Communications
- Working closely with the President/CEO, the Vice-Presidents of Community Impact and Fund Development, and others as appropriate:
- Designs and implements an overarching strategy to broaden awareness of UWSC’s brand and mission, including print and social media communication, the website, and public relations messages to consistently articulate and reinforce the UWSC’s brand and mission.
- Designs and implements an overarching strategy to broaden awareness of SCFoP’s brand, its initiatives and results, including print and social media communication, the website, and public relations messages to consistently articulate and reinforce SCFoP’s impact.
- Develops campaign materials and marketing materials for special events consistent with UWSC and SCFoP’s brand and results.
- Generates online content to engage audience segments, including campaign leaders and other donors, including a strategy for how the online content can lead to measurable action. Identifies the who, how, and when to target for dissemination and engagement.
- Implements communications vehicles to create momentum and awareness with periodic testing to assess effectiveness of chosen communications activities.
- Manages the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic communication including, but not limited to newsletters, brochures, and website.
- Manages the ongoing administration and maintenance of the website and ensures that new and consistent information is posted regularly.
- Manages all media contacts.
- Supervises the Marketing Coordinator to oversee implementation to ensure fundraising, increased awareness and goodwill.
- In coordination with the VP of Fund Development, identify opportunities for new fundraising events and opportunities.
- The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate how they fulfill the following requirements:
- At least 5-7 years of relevant work experience, with a track record of leading, inspiring, and developing high-performance teams.
- Proven experience in successfully designing and implementing communications strategies to engage a wide range of audiences, including donors and corporations.
- Enthusiasm for and commitment to promoting UWSC’s mission.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the flexibility and finesse to effectively engage others in activities related to communications.
- High energy and maturity to act as a unifying force for coherently telling the story of UWSC with the capacity to address both strategic and tactical issues through engagement with others.
- Able to work independently as a self-starter who enjoys innovating and implementing new initiatives
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation skills to effectively engage a wide range of audiences, including senior business leaders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and one or more desktop publishing software packages.
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with Stanislaus County.
- Fluency in a non-English language.
Environmental Conditions
- Indoors in typical office settings with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes approximately ninety percent (90%) of the time.
- Frequent computer use at workstation.
- Regular attendance at meetings held at locations throughout the county.
- Frequently work at fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
