The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Development Director - Gala in Memphis, TN. The director is responsible for cultivating and stewarding a vast base of corporate partners and individual donors, driving results to achieve the campaign goal and beyond. The director will provide leadership and support to high-level volunteers, including executives and c-suite volunteers.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Solicits and maintains high-level corporate sponsors & individual donors by developing year-round cultivation plan ensuring superior customer relations
  • Procure new corporate sponsorships and enhance existing sponsorships to achieve campaign budget and contribute to overall market-wide campaign annual budget.
  • Lead efforts in marketing, promotion and event planning for fundraising campaign
  • Provides staff leadership in planning, development, maintenance, implementation and evaluation of Heart Ball activities including sponsorships, auction, and individual giving.
  • Responsible for executive and C-suite volunteer recruitment, orientation and training, event logistics, year-round planning, sponsorship solicitation, auction solicitation, and evaluation of the Heart Ball
  • Development of a strategic fundraising plan & annual budget, including goal setting, market potentials, sponsorship goals and objectives, strategies, audience development and ticket sales, evaluation and cost of effective techniques
  • Works as part of a team to consult with staff and volunteers in all aspects of event fundraising
  • Establishes and maintains an effective database and cultivation plan for corporate prospects, donors and successor management
  • Plan, implement and evaluate night of event logistics and both live and silent auctions and other revenue generating Heart Ball activities
  • Responsible for Heart Ball related communications including invitations, programs, and auction information and securing the appropriate approval prior to release
  • Recruits, trains, organizes, and supports the volunteers of the Sponsorship Committee, Auction Committee, Logistics Committee, Individual Giving Committee and oversees the recruitment of Chairs and Honorees
  • In accordance with best practices, becomes proficient with current Heart Ball software programs and utilizes software to track auction, maintain accurate records, create auction book and bid forms, track table seating and produce reports to evaluate event
  • Supports and ensures execution of National and Regional policies, procedures, standards, best practices, guidelines and benchmarks
  • Maintains timely communication with all internal and external stakeholders to ensure all information requests and deadlines are met
  • Occasionally, work community events on behalf of the AHA and collaborate with the local team to share the organization’s mission in the community
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends and travel throughout the market, the region and to the national center as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3 – 5 years preferred experience with the American Heart Association, or a similar non-profit organization in a fundraising position, or 3 – 5 years preferred experience with proven success in marketing, sales, event planning, fundraising or new business development.
  • Knowledge and skills in fundraising principles, practices and techniques
  • Ability and experience to recruit, train, counsel, and manage high-level volunteers and to develop long range organizational goals and follow through with them
  • Ability to lead a team but also to work independently
  • Ability to apply sound judgment and problem-solving skills to conflicts
  • Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication, including large and small group presentations, group facilitation and training
  • Ability to read, comprehend and analyze number goals and fundraising reports
  • Ability and willingness to travel and to work evenings and weekends on occasion
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office tools and databases
