The Associate Director, HIV Prevention and Mitigation provides technical leadership for the project and support to the Technical Director in the management of project interventions for HIV prevention and mitigation including HIV case finding, linkage to care, condom programming, voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), PEP, PrEP and other emerging biomedical prevention approaches towards the achievement of UNAIDS 95-95-95. The Associate Director will ensure the appropriate application of sound technical strategies and best practices to the design and implementation of these HIV prevention and mitigation interventions.

Areas of Responsibility: 

With the support of the Technical Director, oversee the development of strategies for the design and implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation interventions.

  • Liaise with relevant agencies to share information and avoid duplication in the implementation of prevention and mitigation programs.
  • Remain informed on current programs in the HIV/AIDS care and prevention and mitigation field by review of current literature and is alert to any implication of such research for department activities.
  • Provide technical assistance in HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation capacity building to field programs.
  • Develop guidelines, tools and recommendations related to the implementation, evaluation of prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS.
  • Contribute to development of lessons learned from programs and projects related to prevention of HIV/AIDS and apply these lessons to modify existing program and improve the design of new programs.
  • Represent FHI/Eswatini to donors and government officials on issues of prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS.
  • Ensure that results from research and published best practices are incorporated into HIV/AIDS prevention interventions and contributes significantly to this literature.
  • Develop concept papers and operational research papers to improve and or extend existing knowledge in the management of HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
MB.BS/MD/PhD or similar degree with 7 to 9 years relevant experience with at least 5 years progressive experience working in the health or development field in Eswatini.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in prevention services for HIV/AIDS.
  • Possession of an MPH or post graduate degree in a related field is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in project development, planning and facilitating technical training. 
  • Familiarity with Eswatini health system and NGOs and CBOs is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of health and development programs in developing countries in general and Nigeria specifically.
  • Experience in designing and implementing HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation programs in developing countries.
  • Sound knowledge of ongoing and emerging issues in relation to HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation.
  • Familiarity with the scientific literature on HIV/AIDS and with research on prevention and mitigation issues.
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and understanding of the political and ethical issues surrounding HIV infection.
  • Ability to work well with others and to develop and maintain compatibility among project staff, subcontractors, consultants, and recipients of assistance.
  • High degree of proficiency in written and spoken English communication, including presentation and training skills.
