The Chief Development Officer provides executive leadership, strategy development, planning, execution and accountability for Metro United Way’s revenue generation and donor relations activities. Success requires a commitment to high functioning partnerships with all areas of the organization including community impact, operations, data analytics, marketing, and volunteer engagement. The incumbent must exhibit a professional presence and encourage collaboration at all levels of the organization. Must demonstrate a commitment to being data driven in developing and executing strategies, with clear metrics and measurements identified.
This position provides prominent leadership in developing, promoting and maintaining solid collaborations with corporations, foundations, and individual donors to raise the revenue required for increased, sustainable community impact. Must have the presence, the depth and breadth of experience, and credibility to represent MUW in the corporate, foundation, and high net-worth sectors.
The Chief Development Officer is responsible for the executive leadership of Metro United Way’s revenue generation work, which includes:
- Executive oversight of the Community Giving (including the Annual Campaign), Corporate and Individual Engagement, Major Gifts and Tocqueville Society, Planned Giving and Endowment, Grants, Development Operations and Stewardship. Works closely with the VP, Community Giving, VP, Engagement and VP, Major Gifts to ensure continuous improvement and strategy refinement as necessary.
- Executive oversight of the Individual Donor Experiences, including the Tocqueville Society, Planned Giving, Endowment Giving and Leadership Giving. Develop and manage strategies to ensure that all donors are experiencing world-class service and stewardship.
- Expand and diversify fundraising by integrating existing channels of support with the creation of new channels that increase donor participation and revenue.
- Develop and lead the refinement and implementation of an ambitious fundraising strategy and annual plans for workplace giving and major gifts, as well as foundation relations, corporate giving, special events, planned giving and transformational gifts.
- Partner closely with the Board of Directors and other key stakeholders and donors to develop and support their fundraising potential.
- Leverage the CEO and other influential stakeholders to create and maintain key external relationships.
- Create initiatives to expand Metro United Way’s prospect pipeline by accessing new and leveraging existing networks.
- Provide strong direction and management to the development team, including the effective and thoughtful managing of systems, processes, and measurement to monitor, project and guide fundraising results and activity.
- Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field both inside and outside the MUW network.
- Provide professional support and leadership for various volunteer committees that support the MUW development effort.
- Leads, directs and supervises assigned staff by recruiting, developing and coaching the staff to create a motivated, high performing team that can reach the strategic goals and objectives of Metro United Way.
- Provide positive executive leadership, management and supervisory support to all team members in the Community Giving/Donor Relations department, and more broadly, serve as a role model and mentor for them and others in the organization as a member of the executive leadership team.
- At least a minimum of five years’ senior executive leadership and management experience in a large non-profit, corporation, or similar organization with a level of complexity and visibility consistent with Metro United Way.
- This role has significant interaction and collaboration with both internal and external constituents. This may include, but is not limited to, meeting with community partners such as corporations, individuals, universities, government leaders, other United Way affiliates, United Way Worldwide and network partners, civic and non-profit leadership, media contacts, other MUW team members and leaders, boards of directors and volunteer committees, as well as presenting to the board of directors and to the Metro United Way team.
- The person in this role must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. This person will have budgeting responsibility for the all fundraising groups and must be willing and able to budget and forecast expenses and make tradeoffs both within and outside the groups to meet the needs of the organizations.
- The Chief Development Officer will respectfully provide dissenting views and create an environment where others are also encouraged to do so.
