United Way of the Bluegrass (UWBG), a leader and motivator of change in Central Kentucky, advances the common good of the community by fighting for the education, basic needs, and financial stability of every person in the Bluegrass region.

UWBG seeks a leader who demonstrates a strong ability to raise community awareness and clearly articulate an innovative message of vision and direction. The qualified candidate is a self-starter who seeks out, cultivates and enjoys building and maintaining strong and authentic donor and stakeholder relationships.  This person must be able to engender trust and empathy and relate to donors in a highly professional, honest and caring manner. A successful track record in diverse fundraising programs is required. 

The successful candidate will have substantial experience working or volunteering in the nonprofit sector (United Way experience is desirable but not required), interacting with volunteers and diverse boards, and working/partnering with state and federal entities. Alternatively, the person we seek will have extensive experience in leadership and management of organizations of comparable size and mission.  The new leader will have the proven ability to command the confidence and respect of stakeholders and a demonstrated track record of promoting diversity and building collaborations with the community at large. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The President & CEO provides strong, innovative and collaborative leadership in developing financial resources and in identifying and responding to community priorities in education and health and human services; creates and builds awareness of United Way’s role in the region including involvement of its diverse constituencies; and maintains accountability for the overall operational and fiscal integrity of the organization with the policies set by the Board.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university required; advanced degree or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • S/he must demonstrate a high level of intelligence and intellectual curiosity with a desire to explore new ideas and innovative approaches to solving problems.
  • S/he has unquestioned integrity; a long-term perspective; a strong sense of accountability; a practical ability to get things done; wisdom and good judgment; a fair and thoughtful approach to management, combined with the flexibility and courage to shift direction and experiment with new initiatives; excellent verbal and written communication skills; a high energy level and sense of humor.
  • The person we seek will have significant experience in executive level leadership and management in a nonprofit organization or in a complex public corporate entity with considerable interaction in the nonprofit sector.
  • A successful track record in management, including financial management, human resources, budgeting, contract administration, and strategic planning, is expected. This person will possess strong planning, interpersonal and communications skills. 
  • S/he must have a proven ability to network, develop and maintain relationships with community representatives, business executives, foundation officials, donors, high level government officials and the media. preferred.
