Save the Children is a recognized leader in protecting children in emergencies in the U.S. and ensuring children and their families have the resources they need to recover. The Community Play Space Lead will support Save the Children in design, implementation and documentation of the Community Play Space activities through and in-collaboration with our Border Project partners. Save the Children is currently working in New Mexico to support local transit/shelter partners in conducting partner-led Community Play Spaces. Building on Save the Children’s global experience, Community Play Spaces in transit shelters and hospitality centers offer children and families a safe, child friendly opportunity to continue to learn and develop after leaving detention. The Community Play Space model allows partners to enhance existing play areas and activities led by their own volunteers, in their own facilities through training and capacity building activities grounded in Save the Children’s global experience. The Community Play Space Lead is the primary program implementer and is responsible for partner outreach, play space assessment, designing and determining Save the Children’s targeted technical assistance needed to enhance current play spaces. The Community Play Space Lead will facilitate a pilot Community Play Space currently targeted for the Las Cruces Armory Shelter with the intent to develop a model to hand over to partner volunteers.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • ASSESSMENT and COMMUNICATION: Site Lead will work with Project Lead and Child Protection Technical Advisor to provide ongoing assessment of the needs of beneficiaries and local community. In partnership with local leaders, as well as the Project Lead and CP technical Advisor, help identify where program modifications or adaptions need to be made to program model.
  • PARTNER COORDINATION: Develop and maintain strong partnerships with local leaders and community organizations where Community Play Spaces and technical guidance could be welcomed. Coordinate visits, play area set ups, trainings amongst partners as needed to ensure interested partners have support.
  • PROGRAM PLANNING, TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS:  In collaboration with the Project Manager and CP Technical Advisor:
    • Support partners in enhancing play spaces for children through Community Play Space technical support
    • Community Play Space facilitation as needed, with an objective to pilot, learn, and document in preparation to hand the program over to partners
    • Assess and determine, with partners what technical and material assistance is needed to enhance safe and supportive play spaces
    • Work with Border project management and technical advisors in determining program and partner plans including training, program quality monitoring, and package of assistance needed to safely enhance Community Play Spaces
    • Determine what forms and planning processes would enhance partners’ capacity to deliver safe Community Play Spaces and adapt as needed from global programming
    • Ensure that children’s views and feedback are incorporated.
  • CHILD SAFEGUARDING:  Ensure that all staff and volunteers working in any Save the Children program uphold Save the Children’s Child Safeguarding Policy and procedures as well as principles of do no harm and confidentiality.  
  • ENSURE THAT THE COMMUNITY PLAY SPACE IS DESIGNED TO BE AS INCLUSIVE AS POSSIBLE:  Work with partners to design activities and spaces that ensure that children feel comfortable, safe, and respected. Identify needs and support in providing technical assistance to partners in promoting inclusivity through ensuring that all children are able to participate equally in activities, and that activities meet the needs of boys, girls, children with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
  • MONITORING, EVALUATION, ACCOUNTABILITY AND LEARNING:  Site Lead will write a daily update for community play space related activities and give to Project Manager.  They will also help to ensure staff and volunteers are trained and track how many children and families are served.
Educational Background: 
High School diploma or equivalent required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 2-3 years' professional experience
  • Advanced Spanish language skills
  • Dedicated people manager, competent in coaching and mentoring others, with the ability to provide personal support to a diverse cohort of staff/partner volunteers
  • Clear thinker who remains calm and focused when working under pressure
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience ensuring adherence to organizational policy, practice and systems that ensures compliance with requirements and organizational risk management standards.
  • Self-starter who can identify strategic opportunities and areas for improvement
  • Flexible team player
  • Highly developed relationship building, influencing, negotiating and interpersonal skills.
  • Adaptable working style; effective when working in situations that may appear ambiguous.
  • Proven problem solver and ability to prioritize in a fast paced and often high pressure work environment
  • Experience as a champion and advocate of good Child Safeguarding and Anti-Harassment practice.

Desirable:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Non-profit experience
  • Experience working with multi-cultural teams
  • Strong command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Strong project management and administrative skills grounded in pragmatic and solution oriented outcomes
