In collaboration with the Medical Director, the clinician will function as the primary provider of medical services. The clinician will carry full responsibility for the initiation and maintenance of patients in the family planning regimen, as well as provide leadership in all aspects of comprehensive clinical services. Each clinician functions within the approved guidelines established by the Medical Director and outlined in Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky Manual of Standards and Guidelines.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Take and record, or review and interpret, the medical and social history of contraceptive patients.
- Perform appropriate medical screening procedures for women and men including, but not limited to, breast, testicular, and pelvic examinations. The latter includes speculum examination, bimanual examination, obtaining materials for STI testing, cytological smears (and other specimens as indicated,) and other types of more specialized screening procedures as may be indicated by the manual of standards and guidelines.
- Perform appropriate medical screening for patients with possible early pregnancy loss, undocumented uterine pregnancy, and other problem issues. Consult with Physicians, Medical Director, and/or Director of Abortion Services as needed.
- Triage calls from post procedure patients and consult with Physicians, Medical Director, and/or Director of Abortion Services as needed.
- Perform and interpret ultrasound.
- Provide recovery services on an as needed basis.
- Assist patients considering abortion services by reading state mandated script and providing non-directive counseling and information.
- Interpret laboratory data and order appropriate additional laboratory investigations when indicated.
- Assist in the overall operation and administration of the laboratory (provider performed microscopy), including specimen handling and processing, and prompt, accurate, and proficient reporting of test results.
- Evaluate patients, suggest, and implement treatment regimens (including contraceptive choice), for patients so evaluated. The implementation duty includes diaphragm fittings, dispensing contraceptive supplies and medications and IUD removals. IUD insertion and Implanon insertion and removal upon training.
- Refer patients with abnormal conditions or other medical problems found on the examination. Responsible for proper referral follow up.
- Provide, counsel and advise on family planning methods to patients; receive and handle patient questions and problems relating to these methods.
- Assist with training of staff in health center operations, recovery care, infection prevention, environmental maintenance, and health education.
- Maintain emergency response supplies and materials.
- Provide evaluation, problem identification and formulation of treatment plans as medically indicated.
- Maintain patient records, both written and electronic, and ensure inclusion of all appropriate findings and recommendations.
- Participate in a team approach to patient care.
- Participate in a team approach to meet established operational benchmarks.
- Participate in health center efforts to achieve established goals for productivity.
- Participate in health center/affiliate efforts to achieve established revenue cycle goals.
- Adhere to affiliate policies on customer service, professionalism, wait times and addressing of client complaints.
- Participate in any research or clinical trials that may, from time to time, involve family planning activities within the agency.
- Recognize ongoing responsibility to work for the continuing improvement in the overall function of the health center and make appropriate suggestions in this regard to the Medical Director, Lead Clinician, and managers responsible for health center operations.
- Comply with all PPINK protocols, policies and procedures.
- Performs billing and coding according to guidelines.
- Proactive in completion of training activities and continuing education (if applicable).
- Writes plan of care for abnormal test results and follow up per PPINK policy and CDC guidelines when applicable. Provides alternative plan of care if patient unable to comply with preferred plan of care.
