AMERICORPS HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Community IMPACT, 2017-2018
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Orange County United Way (OCUW) fights for the education, health, housing and financial stability of every person in our community. By 2024, we strive to increase by one-third the number of healthy youth in Orange County, as measured by childhood obesity rates. OCUW is seeking a team oriented, problem solver who is passionate about helping youth live healthy lifestyles through the implementation of Healthy Schools Initiative (HSI).
OCUW’s HSI is an evidenced based effort utilizing a collective impact framework to empower schools in promoting the health and well-being of their community to reach their optimal potential.
The scope of the Healthy School’s Initiative includes the following pillars:
- Pillar #1 - Physical Activity
- Pillar #2 - Advocacy & Wellness Councils
- Pillar #3 - Nutrition Education
POSITION SUMMARY:
The AmeriCorps Health & Wellness Program Coordinator will support key programmatic efforts of the HSI. The position will specifically support all schools involved in OCUW’s HSI.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Assist in completing the School Health Index Assessment (SHI) and determine Action Plans
- Assist in the evaluation of pre/post Physical Fitness Test (PFT) data and creating an evaluation and assessment report
- Coordinate Healthy Beverage Campaign at all schools
- Recruit college volunteers to implement water taste testing
- Collect pre/post water campaign tests
- Generate a summary report Develop a culturally competent Social Media/Communications Campaign to educate students and the community on the HSI and drive interest
- Develop a Social Media/Communications Calendar
- Ensure key contacts at each school are continuously posting about activities/efforts/accomplishments of the HSI and establish a strong social media presence
- Implement prize based competitions to get students, parents and teachers engaged in social media contests
- Assist in the creation of or create quantitative tools to track and measure social media participation
- Generate a social media summary report at the end of the school year
- Assist in developing and delivering health, nutrition and physical activity programming
- Assist in conducting and/or coordinating periodic outreach activities at identified schools and in the community
- Assist in facilitating health education classes in one-on-one or group settings
- Represents OCUW and serves as a liaison for HSI projects and activities at schools
- Reports to the Director of Health & Evaluation and supports the health work of the organization.
- Works closely with the Health Program Coordinator to assure strategic and operational coordination of health activities are managed
- Regularly attend OCUW’s HSI partnership meetings with Orange County Department of Education and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited college or university in public health, health administration, human services, social work, psychology, sociology or another related field. Or at least 1-3 years of experience in a professional setting and a strong interest in health is required.

- Strong belief in United Way’s mission, approach and core values
- Reliable transportation to get to/from school sites and United Way
- Must have background and/or knowledge in obesity prevention strategies and current health trends
- Proven ability to execute strategies and problem solve
- Experience in program planning, development, and implementation
- Provide technical assistance/support to schools
- Comfort and experience with convening and facilitating meetings
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Work with a diverse group of people
- Manage time effectively
- Prioritize and meet deadlines
- Ability to adapt to a fast paced environment and work simultaneously on many different kinds of tasks
- Follow complex instructions; think logically in following procedures and instructions
TERM OF SERVICE & SERVICE REQUIREMENTS:
- Service begins October 2, 1017 and will end August 31, 2018. During this time AmeriCorps member must complete 1,700 hours of service. Typical schedule will consist of M-F 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., can be flexible as requested.
