POSITION DESCRIPTION, 2017-2018
Program Overview –
The Orange County United Way, a mission driven organization committed to fighting for the Health, Education, Income and Housing of its most vulnerable residents, is seeking a team-oriented, problem-solver that is passionate about our United Way’s education work to help implement its Youth Careers Connection Program.
Youth Career Connections (YCC) is Orange County United Way’s work-based learning (WBL) initiative that infuses classroom learning with real-world career opportunities by connecting high school students directly to employers so they graduate college and career ready. YCC offers high school students hands-on learning opportunities (field trips, guest speakers, internships, teacher externships, and teacher pitch panels) that are integrated with classroom instruction. This initiative supports four schools in two districts in Anaheim Unified School District and Garden Grove Unified School District.
Position Summary –
The AmeriCorps WBLC will support key programmatic efforts of the YCC program in its efforts to address OCUW’s FACE 2024 goal of systemically cutting the high school dropout rate by 50%. The position will specifically support all medical Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways at the four schools United Way is supporting through YCC.
The AmeriCorps WBLC will identify, outreach and recruit Medical/Science industry professionals, companies and organizations in Orange County that can participate and add curricular value to the medical CTE pathways at Anaheim, Savanna, Los Amigos and Santiago high schools. The position will align each career awareness, exploration, and preparation activity to the pathway course sequencing and act as liaison between United Way and the health related companies/organizations.
Major Duties –
- Support the Workforce Readiness Program Manager with providing work-based learning opportunities (speakers, field trips, internships, teacher externships and pitch panels) at school sites that have medical CTE pathways. Ensure activities align to career theme and course curriculum.
- Secure 15 of internships
- Secure 3 of teacher externships
- Secure 2 of field trips
- Secure 16 of Speakers
- Secure 5 of Industry Learning Panels
- Network, initiate and develop relationships with employers and professionals within the Medical/Health Sciences industry sector.
- Work with Workforce Readiness Program Manager and district leads to ensure students receive workplace readiness curriculum to prepare them for summer internships.
- Work with Workforce Readiness Program Manager to coordinate and support YCC internship program from recruitment, internship fair, matching for students in health pathways. Ensure compliance with state and federal laws and all district requirements, especially when placing and onboarding students in internships.
- Track all work-based learning opportunities into WBL accountability tracking book throughout the school year.
- Develop a Social Media about Youth Career Connections and the activities at each school.
- Regularly attend Youth Career Connections work-based learning meetings and professional development.
- Contribute regularly to United Way newsletters and communications with success stories of Youth Career Connections/WBL.
- Assist with regional WBL events as required (YCC showcase TBD).
Job Requirements –
- Minimum of an undergraduate degree and/or at least one year of experience in an educational or professional setting
- Strong belief in the United Way’s mission, approach and core values
- Fierce commitment to support high quality educational opportunities for all students
- Must have background and/or knowledge of:
- Career Technical Education pathways
- Program planning and implementation
- Reliable transportation to get to/from school sites and United Way office
- Proven ability to execute effectively against strategy and exceed goals consistently
- Ability to adapt to a fast paced and dynamic environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer and technology skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders (employers, administrators, teachers, parents, students)
- Ability to work under pressure and perform tasks with limited direction
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
Term of Service & Service Requirements –
Service begins November 2017 and will end on August 31, 2018. During this time AmeriCorp member must complete 1700 hours of service. Typical schedule will consist of M-F 9-5 pm but can be flexible as requested.
