Indiana United Ways is the state association that works with more than 50 of Indiana’s United Ways to create a thriving United Way network. This key position engages and guides members through implementing and analyzing community impact work, advocacy, and other special projects.   

Supports local United Ways in implementing effective community impact work that makes a difference for communities and appeals to donors. Supports members in using the enterprise-wide Global Results Framework and other data systems to measure and report outcomes.  Plans and executes strategies to build capacity of Indiana’s United Ways to engage the community through a variety of advocacy activities, and works to build collaborative relationships with elected officials, businesses and nonprofit partners.  

Areas of Responsibility: 

Community Impact: 

  • Engage in cross-functional team to support members in implementing a donor-centered business model, fueled by relevant and effective impact in the community. Stay updated and informed on community impact best practices and trends.  
  • Engage members and stakeholders with the United Way ALICE® Project. Convene an expert Research Advisory Council to inform this work. Work with members to develop applied uses for the ALICE report. 
  • Work collaboratively with VP of Community Impact & Resource Development in grant writing and other resource development activities.  
  • Develop expertise on the United Way Worldwide Global Results Framework in order to assist local United Ways in collecting and reporting quality data. Serve as part of the Impact team to support member needs for training and technical assistance. 
  • Provide support to United Ways in connecting their outputs and outcomes with relevant partners on key shared goal areas.  Convene Community Impact staff to tackle shared challenges and develop solutions. 

Advocacy:  

  • Research and stay informed of statewide and community issues; maintain relationships with statewide leaders and stakeholders to reach common goals. Serve as main point of contact with contracted lobbying group and key coalitions. 
  • Develop and implement policy agenda with guidance from Public Policy committee and board of directors. Support Committee chair in leading monthly Public Policy calls.  
  • Engage members and volunteers through grassroots advocacy including communications and social media around public policy, in-district or regional events, statehouse days and third house session communications. Lead efforts to engage members in using digital advocacy tools.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in social sciences required.  Master’s degree preferred. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong knowledge and experience working in community development, human services, education, or similar. 
  • Experience leading projects and working in community impact; familiarity with outcome and impact metrics. 
  • Knowledge of Indiana and its political, demographic and socioeconomic landscape. 
  • Experience in data analysis and evidence-based practices. 
  • Experience working with volunteers. 
  • Ability to persuade others, skills in consultative selling. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office computer applications. 
  • High level of prioritization and organization skills.  
  • Strong written and verbal communication, experience public speaking to small and large audiences. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with set deadlines/guidelines.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team-based environment.  
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse population. 

Physical Demands/Work Environment: 

  • Employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.  
  • Moderate level of stress caused from tight deadlines.  
  • Moderate level of mental and/or visual fatigue and/or eyestrain may result from looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time. 
  • Occasional work outside of normal business hours. 
  • Periodic travel is required and access to own transportation and a valid driver's license is necessary.
