United Way of Greater Houston adopted a new strategic direction in 2018 that is setting the course for transformational change.  As the organization approaches 100 years of service in the community, this new direction has been aptly named Second Century Vision.  Second Century Vision has four distinct strategic goals around mission, resource development, positioning in the community, and internal capacity and capability.  The goals are as follows:

  • United Way of Greater Houston will create the opportunity for every person in our community to thrive by leading, serving, influencing and convening the nonprofit social services sector to deliver quality services with exceptional outcomes.
  • United Way of Greater Houston will substantially grow the financial resources needed to improve lives and change community conditions through traditional and non-traditional fundraising approaches.
  • United Way of Greater Houston will become the leading voice and expert on the challenges of low-income individuals and families (and their neighborhoods/communities) and educate the Greater Houston community on how to lift this population and create opportunities to thrive. 
  • United Way of Greater Houston will have the capacity, competencies and flexibility to achieve the vision that every person in our community can thrive.

This position will be responsible for the implementation of the goals of Second Century Vision. The Senior Director will be the primary steward of maintaining the transformation created by Second Century Vision, monitoring the social service landscape of the Houston region, making recommendations to adjust strategic initiatives as necessary, and interacting continuously with key community stakeholders.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Leading and working with a cross-section of the organization, the Senior Director will:

  • Leverage the prior work of consultants and management to create a detailed strategic implementation plan.
  • Facilitate the implementation planning establishing timelines and milestones.
  • Coordinate the overall project plan to ensure alignment of milestones across the United Way organization.
  • Track progress to ensure the implementation plan achieves the desired outcomes.
  • Engage frequently with Mission and Strategy liaisons, senior management, other United Way staff, the Strategic Alignment Committee and other committees as necessary to manage performance.
  • Communicate effectively and consistently internally to strengthen engagement and ensure implementation momentum.
  • Coordinate and lead, in conjunction with senior leadership, external communication related to the implementation of Second Century Vision with donors, agencies, partners and others.

For the United Way to become a data-driven organization, the Senior Director will:

Create the data and information capability within the United Way by:

  • Using data, research and analysis to guide the development of baseline measures and metrics at the program-specific and aggregate levels.
  • Facilitating critical decision making and tracking progress and impact of Second Century Vision.
  • Taking advantage of existing data and identifying additional data needs.

Assist in the development of a data tool for service provider use that will help integrate and track client services and measure client-specific outcomes.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s or advanced degree from an accredited university.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience managing/leading significantly-sized projects or areas of responsibility
  • Substantive, multi-year involvement with one or more social-service nonprofits at the senior staff or board level
  • Knowledge of non-profit governance and work experience with volunteers including Boards of Directors
  • Understands the non-profit culture with the ability to work collaboratively across the organization and gain the respect of a diverse team of peers and staff
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver reports, documents and presentations.
